The Rise of Kyoshi delves into the origin story of Kyoshi, the Earth Kingdom-born Avatar. The longest-living Avatar in this beloved world’s history, Kyoshi established the brave and respected Kyoshi Warriors but also founded the secretive Dai Li, which led to the corruption, decline, and fall of her own nation.

In The Shadow of Kyoshi, Kyoshi’s place as the true Avatar has finally been cemented—but at a heavy cost. Kyoshi voyages across the Four Nations, struggling to keep the peace, but while her reputation grows a mysterious threat emerges from the Spirit World.

This thrilling duology follows Kyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice still feared and admired centuries after becoming the Avatar.

"People should know the weight of water. The purpose of life isn't convenience."

I have nothing but purest admiration and fascination for the world of AVATAR. For so many years it has accompanied me and I never tire of returning to it. As with the books about Avatar Kyoshi, this first volume that tells the story of Yangchen did not disappoint me at all. The more serious and more adult tone of the books differs somewhat from the original animated series, but I enjoy that quite a lot. The only thing that bothers me a little is the, in my opinion, slightly monotonous writing style. Apart from that, it is another wonderful addition to this great series.

"You're afraid of failing. You're afraid of every success that might slip through your fingers, every missed chance. You're so afraid of what the voices will say. Don't be."

It is quite rare that I close a book or finish a story with nothing but … happiness. To be honest, I don’t have really much to say. The second and final book of Yangchen’s story picked me up, took me along and held me. A good plot with a few cleverly hidden twists and turns kept me enthralled and was even able to elicit a few emotional outbursts from me – someone who is usually a rather calm and quiet reader. And I felt so much for Yangchen herself. Even though the ending was nice and, as I said, I’m very satisfied, I would have been happy to read more of it. It was a great journey.
