His journey provides an unprecedented entry into the corridors of power, and a remarkable lesson in what makes an effective leader.

4.5/5 Very poignant yet optimistic retelling of the events leading up to and prior to the firing of the former FBI director James Comey. I read this book to get more information of these events as I have been following the Trump administration quite closely. But I was left with this and so much more. Comey through the book describes key moments that shaped him as a person and his definition of what a good, efficient and respectable leader is, ultimately comparing this schema to the pathetic and embarrassing leadership of Donald Trump. Comey educates the reader about the importance of independence and bipartisan nature of the FBI, as-well as the importance of being independent and bi partisan for an individual and not to be sucked into tribalism. Comey also educates the reader on how these various government agencies and positions in government work, and as a foreigner this is quite useful to help bridge ignorance I have. I believed everything that Comey said in this book and it seems to me that he is a very ethical and virtuous man, who was brought into the eye of a cyclone through one of the most tumultuous election cycles to ever take place.

Overall, I think Comey's exploration of what makes a good leader is interesting and there are several passages in this book that I thought were very inspiring. The more biographical passages were fitted fairly well into the narrative when he was exposed to different leaders and in those instances the book worked for me. But in the end this is also his side of the story (of the Clinton e-mails, interactions with Trump etc) and justifying his actions. I thought it read very self righteous at times. Therefore just a middle of the road rating from me.
