Ich weiß nicht genau, wie das passiert ist, aber die Danmei, die ich bisher gelesen habe, waren ausnahmslos großartig.
Irgendetwas an diesen Geschichten fühlt sich besonders an – als hätten die Autor*innen ein echtes Talent dafür, nicht nur eine cozy und gleichzeitig spannende Atmosphäre zu erschaffen, sondern vor allem ihre Charaktere so lebendig darzustellen, dass man sie entweder sofort ins Herz schließt, mit ihnen leidet oder sie aus tiefstem Herzen verachtet. Auch „The Wife Comes First“ gehört für mich definitiv zu den guten Griffen. Die Geschichte verbindet Time-Travel mit einer zweiten Chance – und macht daraus etwas unglaublich Niedliches. Plötzlich wird aus einem grimmigen General ein riesiges, fast schon tollpatschiges „Golden Retriever“-Energiebündel, während sein Gegenpart eher die ruhige, distanzierte schwarze Katze ist. Und genau diese Dynamik funktioniert einfach perfekt. Im Zentrum stehen Jing Shao und Mu Hanzhang. Jing Shao steht kurz vor seinem Tod und erkennt erst in diesem Moment, dass die einzige Person, die ihm all die Jahre treu geblieben ist, genau derjenige ist, der er am meisten vernachlässigt hat: seine eigene Ehefrau, Mu Hanzhang. Mit dem bitteren Wissen, diese Loyalität nie verdient zu haben, stürzen sich die beiden gemeinsam in den Tod – und Jing Shao wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher als eine zweite Chance. Diese bekommt er… aber auf eine alles andere als einfache Weise. Er erwacht nach seiner Hochzeitsnacht – mit all seinen Erinnerungen – und einem verletzten Mu Hanzhang an seiner Seite. Von da an steht für ihn fest: Er wird alles anders machen. Er wird ihn beschützen, ihn wertschätzen und ihn wie einen Schatz behandeln. Sein neues Lebensmotto bringt es perfekt auf den Punkt: „Die Ehefrau kommt zuerst, der Staat an zweiter Stelle und ich selbst zuletzt.“ Doch das Vertrauen von Mu Hanzhang zurückzugewinnen ist nur der Anfang. Denn wie in jedem Danmei, das in einem kaiserlichen Setting spielt, bleiben Intrigen, Machtspiele und Gefahren natürlich nicht aus. Für mich ist diese Geschichte eine richtig gelungene Mischung aus emotionaler Wiedergutmachung, süßer Charakterdynamik und spannender Handlung – mit genau dem gewissen Etwas, das Danmei für mich so besonders macht.

Chased by enemies and pushed into a corner, Jing Shao decides to jump off a cliff with his consort wife. Before that, he prays that if he’s reborn, he’ll treat his husband better than before. And he really wakes up in the past, shortly after his wedding night with Mu Hanzhang, remembering everything that will happen and how badly he treated his husband. What follows is a sweet story about two young men married for political reasons, where one does everything to win the other’s heart. In this world, it’s normal for men to be taken as wives, and for several concubines to live in the household to secure heirs. The book isn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed it. The focus is on their relationship, which I found super sweet. The characters complement each other perfectly. Jing Shao is still impulsive and hot-headed, but he more than makes up for it with how he treats his husband. There’s also plenty of court intrigue and power struggles. The spice scenes didn’t bother me - they’re not overdone. Since the story focuses on romance, the intimate moments feel natural and fitting. For me, this was a refreshing take in the danmei genre. Usually romance is a subplot, but here it’s front and center. I really enjoyed it, even though the names sometimes confused me (they change depending on status and titles, sometimes even in the same sentence ). Can’t wait for the second volume -I had so much fun reading this!
