MAEVE
I've heard a lot of things about Weston Cole. He’s popular. Conceited. Obnoxious. Most importantly, he’s spent the past three years steadily dismantling my family’s football legacy. I should hate him. And I did. Until I encountered him freshman year and discovered he’s also troubled. Captivating. Considerate. When our paths cross again senior year, that knowledge becomes even more dangerous than his suggestive smirk. Hating him was easy. Before I met him.
WESTON
No girl in Glenmont is more untouchable than Maeve Stevens. She lives across enemy lines. Her father is Glenmont’s head football coach. Her twin brother is their quarterback. My latest problem? One conversation with Maeve makes me forget about the decades long rivalry between our two towns. Makes me forget there’s a team of guys relying on me to lead them to victory against our main rival. A few forbidden kisses, and there’s only one thing I want to fight for. Her.

Did this get me out of my reading slump? Yes. Is this a well-written book? F no. The idea is great; it was exactly what I was looking for (except for the sport part maybe, #normalisenonsportsromance btw), but the execution? Meh... You know the phrase "show, don't tell"? Well, this was the exact opposite, it was tell ONLY. The main obstacle for our couple is the legendary (read: barely explored) rivalry between two towns. Their names? Totally unpronounceable and somehow even less memorable. And instead of the author showing us this rivalry through actual physical or verbal altercations, she keeps writing (AND I QUOTE!!!): "If you’re from Glenmont, then you’re obligated to hate anyone from Alleghany." "We’re so obviously Weston Cole from Alleghany and Maeve Stevens from Glenmont. Enemies." "I know everyone in Glenmont would consider it a betrayal. Treason." "The iron wall known as the Alleghany-Glenmont rivalry." "This stupid fucking rivalry. I’ll always be from Alleghany, and you’ll always be from Glenmont." Like… all this yapping and literally no proof to back it up. You might almost admire the author’s unwavering commitment to telling us something without ever showing it. Then I thought, “Okay, shit will hit the fan once everyone finds out about their secret relationship.” F TO THE NO. I was SO excited for Liam to find out, like, I was bracing for a meltdown. Instead, we got… a mild shrug? His reaction was so underwhelming???? Yeah, he wasn’t exactly jumping through hoops or anything, but he acted so unbothered by the whole thing… idk. The book was fine for a casual read, but there was definitely way more potential.
