About the book

Hugh Lofting's The Story of Doctor Dolittle is a foundational work of twentieth-century animal fantasy, introducing John Dolittle of Puddleby, the eccentric physician who abandons human patients after learning the languages of animals. Its episodic plot-moving from domestic comedy to an African expedition to cure a monkey epidemic-combines nursery simplicity with satirical wit, travel romance, and moral fable. Written in a clear, lightly ironic style and accompanied by Lofting's own illustrations, the book belongs to the post-Edwardian tradition of children's literature, though modern readers should recognize its period-bound colonial assumptions. Lofting, born in England in 1886 and trained as an engineer, conceived Doctor Dolittle while serving in the First World War. Unwilling to describe the violence of the trenches in letters to his children, he invented a humane alternative world in which care, linguistic curiosity, and sympathy for nonhuman life replace conflict. His technical imagination and wartime disillusionment helped shape Dolittle's practical idealism. This book is recommended to readers interested in classic children's literature, animal stories, and the history of imaginative prose. Read critically, it remains charming, inventive, and revealing.
