Headstrong girls, angry witches and adventurous grandmas. Shapechangers, dryads and train gods. Wicked fairies, silly tales. And a whole lot of birds. Some of them even talk. Some are arsonists. "Her heart went back to acting the way a witch’s heart ought to act, which was generally to ache at every damn thing and carry on anyway." Against the dark and sad moments about death, there's hope and kindness and laughing-out-loud-humor weaved throughout the stories in a way that reminded me a bit of Terry Pratchett. If you love his witches, you might like many of the stories in this collection. I predict T. Kingfisher's other books to be right up my alleyway.
