Gut und solide, aber für mich nicht ganz rund. Charaktere sind wirklich stark ausgearbeitet, man kann sie direkt vorm inneren Auge sehen. Die Story ist mir leider irgendwie zu verworren, anfangs habe ich ca. 100 Seiten gebraucht um richtig reinzukommen. Dann kam ein wahnsinnig spannender Mittelteil. Leider konnte mich das Ende dann wiederum nicht überzeugen.
Da ich bisher noch kein Buch von Harlan Coben gelesen habe, war ich besonders gespannt auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Reese Witherspoon als Ideengeberin. Der Klappentext klang vielversprechend – eine brillante Chirurgin, medizinische Intrigen, KI und Korruption – all das klang nach einem spannenden Psychothriller. Allerdings hat es für mich recht lange gedauert, bis die Handlung wirklich in Fahrt kam. Der Anfang zieht sich und der Spannungsbogen baut sich erst ab der Mitte spürbar auf. Gleichzeitig hatte ich das Gefühl, dass das Buch zu viel wollte: medizinische Details, technische Themen rund um künstliche Intelligenz, persönliche Tragödien und politische Machenschaften – alles auf knapp 300 Seiten. Das war mir manchmal einfach zu viel des Guten. Obwohl die Idee rund um die Ärztin, die plötzlich mitten in ein Netz aus Lügen und Verschwörungen gerät, sehr interessant war, blieb ich als Leserin häufig verwirrt zurück. Die Auflösung erfolgt nur schrittweise, und oft wusste ich nicht so recht, was gerade passiert oder warum. Einerseits hat das gut zum Psychothriller-Genre gepasst und die Spannung hochgehalten, andererseits empfand ich es auch als anstrengend und etwas holprig konstruiert. Vielleicht liegt es am Schreibstil von Coben, mit dem ich noch nicht ganz warm geworden bin. Es gab durchaus starke Momente und ein insgesamt schlüssiges Ende, doch insgesamt wirkte die Geschichte für mich zu gewollt und nicht immer fließend umgesetzt. Ich bleibe also etwas unentschlossen zurück: spannend, verwirrend, stellenweise überladen – aber mit einer interessanten Grundidee, die leider nicht ganz ihr Potenzial ausschöpft.
