Description

'Fast-moving and entertaining'- Ben Aaronovitch, bestselling author of Rivers of London

Enter a world of magic and adventure in The Library of the Dead by T. L. Huchu. The first book in the spellbinding Edinburgh Nights series.

When ghosts talk, she will listen . . .

Ropa dropped out of school to become a ghostalker - and she now speaks to Edinburgh's dead, carrying messages to the living. A girl's gotta earn a living, and it seems harmless enough. Until, that is, the dead whisper that someone's bewitching children - leaving them husks, empty of joy and life. It's on Ropa's patch, so she feels honour bound to investigate. But what she learns will change her world.

She'll dice with death (not part of her life plan . . .) as she calls on Zimbabwean magic and Scottish pragmatism to hunt down clues. For Edinburgh hides a wealth of secrets. And in the process, she discovers an occult library and some unexpected allies. Yet as shadows lengthen, will the hunter become the hunted?

The Library of the Dead is the first book in the Edinburgh Nights series. Continue the adventure with book two, Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments.

This was a disappointment. By the title of the book, I envisioned something totally different. It almost has nothing to do with the Library itself. The story was kind of boring to me. Also there is a huge lack of background knowledge and history missing, so much I thought I missed a book before and this must have been the second book - it's not... you are left in the dark with the year it plays in and also what exactly happened to explain the strange circumstances in this book. Not my kind of story.

Not really my cup of tea...

this is very much not for me. i dnf'ed it at 56-ish pages. it's about a 14 year old girl talking (like talking talking) to ghosts but only for money i think it's an art for itself writing books in the perspective of a 14 year old and getting the wording and the feeling of an actual teenager. but unfortunately it isn't something i like to read

Alright, were I start? Firstly: Misleading title, the story has nothing to do with a library, yes, there is a library in the story but not much happens there!

DNF@ 10% I really didn’t like the audiobook narration and the writing style of this book. It leans toward stream of consciousness which I’m not a fan of. The wording might be appropriate for the protagonist but it wasn’t pleasant to read and rather prevented me from getting immersed in the story. Additionally the audiobook narrator tried to distinguish the different characters by accent but had the most bored way of reading I’ve heard to date. For anyone loving the supernatural investigator middle grade plot I would recommend picking up Lockwood & Co instead.
