Geniales Buch mit außergewöhnlichem Magiesystem. Absolutes Highlight für mich
Wer Mal Lust auf ein ganz anderes Magiesystem hat ist hier genau richtig. R.J. Bennett hat hier wirklich spannende (teils sehr wissenschaftliche, Phsysik-bezogene) Konzepte eingebaut bei denen ich nicht schlecht gestaunt habe. Die Charaktere haben sehr interessante Hintergrundgeschichten und auch der Aufbau der Welt (bzw. der Stadt, da wir bisher fast nur von dem einen Gebiet wissen) ist super geschrieben. Bewundernswert finde ich auch dass jeder einzelne PoV, der in dem Buch vorkam, interessant war -bei anderen Büchern nervt es mich manchmal zu einem bestimmten Charakter zu wechseln weil die PoVs langweilig oder nervig sind -nicht so in diesem. Ich bin total gespannt wo die Reise noch hinführt und fiebere mit den Charakteren mit. "Justice is a luxury." "No. [...] It is not. It is a right. And it is a right that has long been denied."
Ihr neuester Auftrag führt die Diebin Sancia ganz schön in Versuchung, denn der Gegenstand, den sie stehlen muss, ist außerordentlich mächtig. Als sie merkt, was dieser Schlüssel alles kann, will sie ihn behalten. Erst nach und nach merkt sie, was es mit diesem Artefakt auf sich hat, aber da sind auch schon die mächtigen Handelshäuser hinter ihr her. Bei diesem Hörbuch handelt es sich um den 1. Teil einer Trilogie. Das ungekürzte Hörbuch wird von Yara Blümel vorgelesen und ist insgesamt 18 Stunden und 50 Minuten lang. Mir hat die Stimme von Yara Blümel sehr gut vorgelesen, sie passt sehr gut zu Sansia und liest auch sehr gut vor. Die Handlung spielt in der Stadt Tevanne, hier ist der Sitz der vier mächtigen Handelshäuser Morsini, Michiel, Candiano und Dandolo. Diese haben sich die Stadt untereinander aufgeteilt und jedes Haus herrscht über seinen Teil. Jedes der Handelshäuser will natürlich mehr Macht und dieser besondere Schlüssel könnte ihnen dabei helfen. Die Idee zu dieser Geschichte hat mir unheimlich gut gefallen, den die Art der Magie, um die es hier geht, ist sehr ungewöhnlich. Die Magie hier wird mit Skriben gewirkt, eine Art Schrift, die der Autor sehr komplex erklärt und die man nicht immer versteht. Im Laufe der Handlung erfährt man immer mehr über die Herkunft und das Wirken dieser Skriben, was der Autor sehr spannend und interessant erzählt. Die Geschichte wird aus verschiedenen Perspektiven erzählt, wobei Sancia schon als Hauptfigur zu bezeichnen ist. Sie ist eine ehemalige Sklavin an der Experimente mit Skriben durchgeführt wurden. Dadurch verfügt sie über die besondere Gabe, die Skriben zu hören, was ihr als Diebin sehr gelegen kommt. Sancia ist ein starker weiblicher Charakter, den ich sehr mochte. Wen ich neben ihr auch sehr mochte, war Gregor Dandolo. Gerade seine Entwicklung zum Ende hin haben mich sehr überrascht und auch ein wenig geschockt. Für mich war dieses Hörbuch ein richtiges Highlight und ich kann hier nur eine klare Leseempfehlung aussprechen. Von mir gibt es die volle Punktzahl.
Ich hatte mit diesem Buch einige Schwierigkeiten. Im englischsprachigen Raum scheint diese Trilogie ziemlich bekannt und auch beliebt zu sein, im Deutschen ist sie mir bisher eher weniger aufgefallen. Der Plot und das Magiesystem in diesem Buch heben sich deutlich von vielen anderen Fantasy-Reihen ab, das Worldbuilding ist gut durchdacht und trotzdem konnte mich der Reihenauftakt im Gesamten nicht von sich überzeugen. Die Charaktere waren für mich nicht wirklich greifbar. Ich verfolgte ihr Handeln, fieberte aber nicht mit ihnen mit. Die einigen Längen haben zudem meinen Spaß am Buch gemindert. Ich versuchte es zu mögen, aber es gelang mir nicht. Das Buch war keinesfalls schlecht, nur konnte es mich leider nicht ganz von sich überzeugen. Ich werde der Reihe nochmals mit dem zweiten Band eine Chance geben und hoffe, dass mich dieser mehr fesseln wird und ich den Reihenauftakt bloß zur falschen Zeit gelesen habe.
DNF’d at 35%. I can’t take it anymore. The characters and world felt flat. I’m giving it 2* because of the interesting magic system (such wasted potential!). It reads like YA but not the good kind (like ToG, for example) but the worst kind (like Shadow and Bone). I’m gutted as I purchased the whole trilogy, including the audiobooks, ages ago. I’ll just cut my losses rather than hate-read the books, I guess.
The writing and the interactions between the characters were hilarious. I really loved the author’s humor, reading this book was a delight. I pretty much instantly liked all of the characters, even though or maybe because they weren’t innocent rays of sunshine. But this work isn’t simply comedic. The worldbuilding is quite complex and, even though I didn’t quite understand everything about how scrivings work, it was fascinating and really smart, in my opinion. Besides, there sometimes was an undertone that addressed gender inequality (at least that’s how I interpreted it) which I really liked. Berenice looked at her, disgusted. ‘What? No! God, why does everyone always think a fab is a sex thing when I say it? Plenty of men are fabs and no one ever gets that impression about them!’
I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. In some places the whole thing was a bit... long-winded. The background/worldbuilding came in bits and pieces, and could've made everything far more interesting had it been placed better. A lot of the twists and turns I saw coming from miles away. Overall I liked the concept of it though, scrivings, merchant houses, a world turned upside down. The characters fell a bit flat, as only one of them really seemed to have grown, but the end of it all is promising in regard to future development of the main character. My favorite character: Clef. And the gravity rigs tbh, they had funny dialogues.
7,5/10 Questo libro mi ha sorpreso. L'ho preso a scatola chiusa e ho fatto bene. L'ha storia non è tanto intricata ma comunque riesce a tenerti legato alle pagine. Il mondo magico è mi ha ricordato Elantris e Conciliatore di Sanderson: prende alcune cose di questi due mondi, li fonde insieme in un modo molto originale e interessante. I protagonisti sono divertenti e comunque non sono stereotipati (non tanto almeno). Anche se c'è sono in alcuni momenti un po' troppo ingenui, però almeno non si fanno fregare troppo spesso. Recupererò tutto la serie e forse anche gli altri libri dell'autore.
I’ve been dreading to write a review for this book because I did not like it at all. I read this as a buddy read with my friend and we both liked the first 20% of the book. But suddenly everything went wrong. In „Foundryside“ by Robert Jackson Bennett we mainly follow the thief Sancia on her quest to survive in a city where everyone is hunting for her and her newly scavenged possession. The second perspective we get is one of her hunters called Gregor that has ties to one of the influential merchant houses of the city. I liked the idea of the merchant houses controlling the city because it reminded me of a Medici times Florence. I also was at first intrigued by the magic system but found it soon to be very soft and ill-defined. It felt too convenient at times that things were discovered exactly at the right time to solve a problem. The characters in this book were very inconsistent-especially Sancia. The way she was introduced in the first 20% did at times not match her reactions in the rest of the book. But I have to say that she was still among all the characters in here the least badly written. I hated nearly all the side characters. Their behavior was so stupid it made me laugh. There were so many foolish plans and conversations that it took me out of the story. I did not like the dynamic between the characters and the plot completely spiraled in the second half of the book. To tie it in a neat bow there was also an absolutely unbelievable romance shoehorned into the story. And don’t get me started on the insufferable info-dumps… I made notes on everything I read and talked it through with my buddy and we where both flabbergasted about the turn this book took. I immediately removed all books from the author from my TBR pile. This was in my opinion a great idea badly executed.
