About the book

If you love Julia Quinn's Bridgerton, you won't want to miss Martha Waters' ingenious, laugh-out-loud and sweepingly romantic historical rom-com, To Have and to Hoax!

.................................................

The course of true love - or irritation - never did run smooth.

Five years ago, Lady Violet Grey and Lord James Audley met, fell in love, and married.

Four years ago, they had a fight to end all fights, and have barely spoken since.

Their once-passionate love may have dissolved into cold, detached politeness, but when Violet receives a letter that James has been thrown from his horse, she races to be by his side - only to discover him alive, well, and baffled by her concern.

Outraged, Violet decides to feign an illness of her own to teach her estranged husband a lesson. And so begins an ever-escalating game of manipulation - and a great deal of flirtation between a husband and wife who might not hate each other as much as they thought.

In this warring marriage, which spouse will be the victor?

And will the real prize be winning back the love they each thought they'd lost?

At first, this book was overtly ridiculous, but I enjoyed myself, even if it wasn't written all that well. Towards the end, even I, who usually is the person who says "This is exactly how I want my slow burns to go" when everyone else is already saying "please get a move on" and "can they finally talk to each other", found that this was overtly drawn out. The last about thirty pages seemed to be a waste as they seemed to have the exact same conversation with the same relationship development multiple times. This usually would be exactly what I like, and the first half would have gotten this a nice 3-star-rating, because even through the weak writing, the character interactions and dynamics were funny enough, but the end just dragged so much and the writing just made it worse. Really, if the last 30 pages had not been the way they were, my whole review would have been that very first sentence, but the last pages just made me so fed up. And seeing that the writing was bad enough that only my enjoyment despite it had kept me at thinking I'd give it 3 stars, I cannot in good conscience give it more than these 2.

Well written but everyone is so annoying. All the women are ridiculous and the men are assholes. The two main characters act like children and it’s not cute. ETA almost dnf’d but persevered. It did get better but I’m not sure it was worth the first half. 2.5 rounded up
