Description

A mesmerizing, lyrical tale of the bright and dark sides of love and desire. First-time author Leslye Walton has constructed a layered and unforgettable mythology that "follows Ava Lavender's discovery of her one-of-a-kind self" (Teen Vogue).

Shortlisted for the 2015 Waterstone's Children's Book Prize, Leslye Walton's stunning debut novel is "rich with lyrical and whimsical writing" (Kiera Cass, New York Times bestselling author of the Selection series). Magical realism is woven through this generational saga, creating a narrative reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, with a taste of Chocolat by Joanne Harris.

Foolish love appears to be a Roux family birthright. And for Ava Lavender, a girl born with the wings of a bird, it is an ominous thing to inherit. In her quest to understand her peculiar disposition and a growing desire to join her peers, Ava ventures into the wider world. But it is a dangerous world for a naive girl - a world which may view her as girl or angel. On the night of the summer solstice celebration, the skies open up, rain and feathers fill the air and Ava's journey and her family's saga reaches a devastating crescendo.

Mystischer Realismus

I don't know what to think of this exactly. It was a pretty interesting read, sure. I still don't really know what to think of it. What I know that while reading it was like: That's supposed to be love? Okay.... I never want to fall in love I never want to fall in love Oh that's wholesome, I like it No, no, no, why? Cute, I wish they'll get an happy ending! And in the last third of the book I was too rather happy that I haven't experienced neither the positive nor negative aspect of (especially unrequited) romantic love yet. But then came something again that gave me hope again, thinking the pain might be worth it. Well I hope when I might reread it in some years I'll be more experienced in that field. I'm glad I knew about the trigger warning. I think, without it, I'd been too shocked and destroyed to finish the last part. It was devastating, but at least I was a little more prepared for it. I still can't describe the feeling my crushed and shattered hopes I still had at that scene left. Also the end... I'm not sure what it means. I hope for Rowe that she didn't what I'm afraid she did. And for herselfand Vivianne and Gabe and Cardigan and other people of her surroundings of course. I really hope it.

Oh what a lovely and unique novel. I adored how we got to read about 3 generations of women in the Lavender family. All of those were magical and special in their own way. And the last chapter - oh my god what a beautiful ending. Definitely one of a kind and now one of my all time favourites.

What a wonderful story! I absolutely loved it. We get to know three generations of women dealing with their unique lifestyle. Every single one is wonderful and touching in her own way. Magic Realism und the lyrical prose lead the reader in this very special wolrd of Ava and her family.
