Die Geschichte ist gefüllt von Emotionen, Generationstraumata und (queerer) Identitätsfindung. Der Schreibstil ist wundervoll und die wachsende Verbindung der Protagonistin zu ihrer Mutter, Oma und Vergangenheit wurde authentisch aufgearbeitet. Wenn auch fiktiv, empfinde ich dieses Buch als unglaublich wertvoll, besonders im Zuge des aktuellen #blackhistorymonth ! Große Liebe für dieses Buch ♥️
Tropes: – sapphic love story(s) – slow burn mystery – family secrets – friendship – strangers to friends to lovers . ‘We deserve monuments‘ got straight to my heart. I love how this book balances the love story with the heavier topics. You shouldn’t go into this expecting some fluffy romcom, because no, no way, that‘s not what this is. It is a book about dark family secrets and trauma, about racial violence passing through generations and how to move on from past violence to heal, it’s about friendship and love. This book tackles so many important topics, and still all of this doesn‘t feel too much. It still doesn‘t feel too dark and heavy, because there are always sparks of light. The storyline around the Renaissance club/restaurant is one of these sparks. Throughout the book the story of Mama Letty, Avery’s grandmother is told, but her is not the only story told. There is also her daughter and her secrets. I liked that Mama Letty isn‘t portraited as some flawless heroine, especially regarding her daughter she has had her regrets, and is after all still human, each and everyone of these characters is. . "It's okay to feel lost sometimes, Avery. It's okay to feel like you don't have the answers. You don't need to always have the answers, but you do need to give yourself some grace. It's okay to breathe sometimes. Why does everything have to be so urgent?"
