"Oh what is stronger than a death? Two sisters singing with one breath."

In the small town of Thistleford, on the edge of Faerie, dwells the mysterious Hawthorn family.

There, they tend and harvest the enchanted willows and honour an ancient compact to sing to them in thanks for their magic. None more devotedly than the family's latest daughters, Esther and Ysabel, who cherish each other as much as they cherish the ancient trees.

But when Esther rejects a forceful suitor in favor of a lover from the land of Faerie, not only the sisters' bond but also their lives will be at risk...

The beginning blew my mind. A magic system based on Grammar? Two Willow trees that are called Professors? A town at the edge of Faerie? Amazing! I would have loved to know more about the magic system though.

Even though for the first quarter I was worried I am a little too dim to understand any of this, I really loved it! I think linguists would appreciate the language/magic system of it :D I however was completely enchanted with the focus on sisters. It was incredibly beautiful and tender and then a bit tense for a bit. Adding the short story that previews Amal’s next project, it speaks from and to a reckoning with dangerous men that I greatly appreciated! CNs for murder, death, greed, manipulators, narcissists, grief

Magical, heartbreaking, yet comforting

I rarely write book reviews, but this time I want to put my thoughts into words. I adored this book. It felt like a warm hug, brought me back to my childhood reading/listening to fairy tales and at the same time crushed my heart. As I finished this book, I cried, both out of heartache and happiness. Amal El-Mohtar is slowly becoming my favorite author and this book is no exception.

Keine einfache Sprache

It's hard to read for non native speaker. With magic being Grammar and Fae/Magicians(?) being professors this is not for everyone. But the story is so heartbreakingly beautiful. A romantic fairytale.

A fairy tale and a piece of art but I wished this story and the world and Charakters would be a Novel
