𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. . I recently read Joan He‘s duology Strike the Zither and Sound the Gong! I’ll just talk about Strike the Zither in this one and I won’t spoil anything! . Anyways, I personally gave this one 8.5 out of 10! I really enjoyed it!! It’s was my first enemies to lovers book (I didn’t know that it was enemies to lovers before reading it). It loooved the setting and the historical Asian aspects! It’s a reimagining of the Three Kingdoms and I’m thinking about giving them a try too. It also has been a while since I read an actual fantasy book so it was a good way to get into it again! I instantly fell in love with all of the characters, I do admit that I was conflicted about Zephyr (the main lead) at the beginning, but I understood her personality and reasoning better the more I read. She is just soooo human! With all her flaws and selfish desires. That’s what I liked the most actually. Not her fighting for the general peace out of good will, no she fought for her own desires, regardless if they were for the greater good or not. Every character was selfish in their own way and had a flawed perspective, I love stories like that! Kinda reminded me of the Nier Series with that. I also really enjoyed her and Crows wittiness, they both are smart but also very snarky characters, it’s really refreshing!! . I would definitely recommend this one! Especially if you are into Asian historical dramas or love a good battle between two very smart but also very dumb people (my fav troupe).

Hm. Ein Teil meiner Probleme mit dem Buch könnten darin liegen, dass es eben sehr Young Adult ist - und das soll es auch sein, laut Einordnung. Ich habe mir mal geschworen, ein Buch nie deswegen schlecht zu bewerten, weil ich ignoriert habe, nicht die Zielgruppe zu sein. Das finde ich nämlich ungerecht. Ist ungefähr so wie in einen Kaktus zu fassen und dann zu meckern, weil es piekst. :D Ich fang aber wie immer mit dem Positiven an: Es lies sich gut lesen, daran besteht kein Zweifel. Die Grundidee fand ich sehr spannend und ich werde mir mal eine Zusammenfassung der Geschichte durchlesen, auf der das Buch basiert. Ich mochte es auch tatsächlich, dass Zephyr als Hauptfigur eher unsympathisch ist und fand sie sehr unterhaltsam :D Der Plot-Twist war tatsächlich ganz cool. Jetzt leider die Dinge, die mir nicht gefallen habe, und ich ignoriere hier jetzt absichtlich alles, was ich Young Adult zuschreibe - wie gesagt, das zu kritisieren wäre unfair, weils ein Young Adult Buch ist. Aber vielleicht als Hinweis: Es ist definitiv Young Adult. Wem das oft zu jung ist, der wird hier nicht glücklich! An sich find ich es spannend, wenn der Anfang in der Action startet. Hier kamen aber Action und Worldbuilding zusammen, sodass ich die ersten 50 Seiten super verwirrt war. Auch waren dadurch einige Entwicklungen etwas unlogisch, und es gab viel "Tell" und wenig "Show". Miasma ist ANGEBLICH so krass, aber kriegt eigentlich das ganze Buch über nur einen über den Deckel. Crow ist ANGEBLICH ein krasser Stratege, macht aber ... gar nichts, bzw. Zephyr stellt nicht mal in Frage, dass er gar nichts macht. Ren ist ANGEBLICH so ehrenvoll, aber bis auf das "Ich töte keine Familie" habe ich das nicht so richtig gesehen. Außerdem habe ich eh nicht viel von ihr gesehen, ohne ihre Schwestern und ohne Zephyr wäre sie ziemlich nutzlos gewesen, irgendwie. Die Liebesgeschichte ... Also, problematisch ist es, wenn die Protagonistin mit jeder Figur mehr Chemie hat als mit dem Loveinterest. Ehrlich, ich könnte sie mit allen anderen shippen, aber nicht mit Crow. Da ist für mich kein Funke übergesprungen. Es war ... kein grauenvolles Buch. Das Ende war spannend, es hatte coole Momente und eine solide Grundidee. Aber es hatte eben auch viele Schwächen im Storytelling, in der Nachvollziehbarkeit, im Romance-Anteil. Vielleicht lese ich mal irgendwann den zweiten Band als eBook, aber ich bin einfach nicht investiert genug in die Gesamtheit der Geschichte, um jetzt unbedingt weiterlesen zu wollen.

She is a military strategist and was always thinking three steps ahead. She seemingly had a solution for everything and knew how to outplay everyone. She devoted her life for Xin Ren who is claiming back the empire in the name of the empress. Miasma, the prime ministress, is cruel and has the whole Imperial force behind her. These are the two sides. Miasma vs. Xin Ren. As Miasma’s forces definitely outnumber and overpower Xin Ren’s, Zephyr wants to infiltrate Miasma’s ranks and weaken her from within. There, she meets Miasma’s strategist, “Crow”. You guessed it, he’s the male love interest. Zephyr will do everything in her power for Xin Ren, she devotes her whole life for this cause even when it means she has to lose it for it. So far so good. BUT then the story gets so out of hand so suddenly. From 0-100 there are now gods and ghosts and reincarnations. WHAT. The second half of the book did just not make any kind of sense and was the downfall of this book for me. I mean, yes, it’s a fantasy book, but it should still make sense in this universe, in this story. The romance between Zephyr and Crow was unconvincing, too. They didn’t even know each other and had to spent a short amount of time together. But that’s it. He poisoned her daily because he did not trust her. He never regretted being on Miasma’s side. You know? Miasma, the cruel woman taking over the empire and destroying everyone who gets in her way? Yeah, this one. And he stays by her? How can Zephyr have any feelings for him? Attraction, okay. But love? Nah. Also this “war” between Miasma and Xin Ren, in the end, felt just like a b-fight, but on a bigger scale, dragging the whole empire into it. So, no, I will not recommend this book. There are far better books with a similar vibe. I’ll give it 3 stars as the first half was really good. But that’s about it.
