About the book

From a critically-acclaimed novelist Silvia Moreno-Garcia comes Certain Dark Things, a pulse-pounding and action-packed contemporary fantasy that turns vampire fiction on its head.

Welcome to Mexico City… An Oasis In A Sea Of Vampires…
Domingo, a lonely garbage-collecting street kid, is busy eking out a living when a jaded vampire on the run swoops into his life.
Atl, the descendant of Aztec blood drinkers, must feast on the young to survive and Domingo looks especially tasty. Smart, beautiful, and dangerous, Atl needs to escape to South America, far from the rival narco-vampire clan pursuing her. Domingo is smitten.
Her plan doesn’t include developing any real attachment to Domingo. Hell, the only living creature she loves is her trusty Doberman. Little by little, Atl finds herself warming up to the scrappy young man and his effervescent charm.
And then there’s Ana, a cop who suddenly finds herself following a trail of corpses and winds up smack in the middle of vampire gang rivalries.
Vampires, humans, cops, and gangsters collide in the dark streets of Mexico City. Do Atl and Domingo even stand a chance of making it out alive?

Oh good Lord, where do I start? It definitely was not, what I was expecting from the blurb. There it sounded like Domingo was 12 years old and Atl more like 30+, and they were forming some sort of makeshift family. Very disappointing to read about two stupid teenagers (yeah, I know, Atl's 23, but her behaviours tells something different).<spoiler>I hated nearly everything and everyone in this book, but least of all Bernardino, which makes him my favorite humanoid character. My favorite character was by far Cualli, the dog. At least the dog didn't get killed, else I'd have thrown the book out the window.Chapter 32 was very bad, but chapter 34 was way worse, but the worst by far was chapter 40. Atl's now suddenly trying to behave like an adult? I'm not buying it.I definitely wasn't sad about anyone's death, every single one was deserved.</spoiler>The idea behind the different vampire species is however very interesting, and I liked the appendix.

It's a grim story and is completely different like the authors other books. But I liked the overall idea of humans and vampires lived side-by-side. I enjoyed the thought of drug-dealing-vampires and the mafia-like organisation of the different clans. This detail gave the book its little ✨extra✨. Although, the lore of the world could have been deeper for me to get more invested. It's an atmospheric read with an dangerous and violent setting. Also, the different cultures and their myths which are represented is astonishing. It felt like there was put many hours of research in this book.
