About the book

"Victoria" is a haunting and lyrical exploration of the complexities of human emotion and the rigid barriers of social class. Written by Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun, this masterpiece of romantic tragedy tells the story of Johannes, a miller's son turned poet, and his lifelong, unrequited love for Victoria, the daughter of a wealthy landowner.Set against the backdrop of a changing Norwegian society, the narrative follows their intertwined lives through missed opportunities, misunderstandings, and the crushing weight of pride. Hamsun's prose captures the intensity of youth and the bittersweet reality of a love that can never truly be realized due to the constraints of status and duty. As Johannes rises in fame through his writing, he remains anchored to his childhood obsession, while Victoria struggles between her feelings for him and the expectations of her noble family."Victoria" remains one of the most poignant love stories in world literature, celebrated for its psychological depth and its evocative portrayal of the human heart's capacity for both passion and suffering. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
