Raya is one of those lost souls. She had dreamed of being a songwriter, but when her brother died, she gave up on her dream and started living his instead.
One day on the subway, as her thoughts wander, she’s swept off to the Elsewhere Express. There she meets Q, an intriguing artist who, like her, has lost his place in the world.
Together they find a train full of wonders, from a boarding car that’s also a meadow to a dining car where passengers can picnic on lily pads to a bar where jellyfish and whales swim through pink clouds.
Over the course of their long, strange night on the train, they also discover that it harbors secrets—and danger: A mysterious stranger has stowed away and brought with him a dark, malignant magic that threatens to destroy the train.
But in investigating the stowaway's identity, Raya also finds herself drawing closer to the ultimate question: What is her life's true purpose—and is it a destination the Elsewhere Express can take her to?

I adored Water Moon, so my expectations for The Elsewhere Express were high. And while I can absolutely see why others are enchanted, I never quite connected with this one. The world is dreamy and imaginative, but for me, the imagery was too abstract, sometimes confusing, and I couldn’t fully fall into it. That said, if the themes it touches — grief, healing, identity, and finding your place in a strange world — resonate with you, this might pull your heartstrings in a way that surprises you. For some, it absolutely will be a hidden gem. I still love Samantha Sotto Yambao’s writing style — lyrical, thoughtful, and evocative — and I highly appreciate the themes explored here in a unique, delicate way. Schon nachdem ich im Laden die ersten Seiten gelesen hatte war klar, dass dieses Buch Potential hat mich mitten ins Herz zu treffen. 𝐃𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥 Von der ersten Seite an habe ich mich in den Schreibstil verliebt. Er ist poetisch, märchenhaft und voller Metaphern, die richtig tief treffen. Die Autorin hat das Talent, in wenigen Worten tiefgründige Themen wundervoll zu formulieren, so dass ich gar nicht anders konnte, als das Buch zu annotieren. 🥹 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐤𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞 & 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧 Raya und Q haben beide schlimme Schicksalsschläge hinter sich und kämpfen sehr mit ihrem Leben und ihren Entscheidungen. Beide bekommen an Bord des Elsewhere Express eine neue Chance den Sinn, den sie verloren haben, wiederzufinden. Ihnen dabei zuzusehen war heilsam und bewegend. Nebencharaktere wie Rasmus, Abbie und Lily haben die beiden sehr gut ergänzt. 𝐃𝐚𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 Der Elsewhere Express ist absolut unglaublich und phantasievoll (100% Studio-Ghibli-Vibes). Stellt Euch einen Zug vor, der nur aus Gedanken und Liedern besteht, die aber echte Wagons voller traumhafter Welten errichten. Alles ist möglich in diesem Zug, jeder Gedanke kann etwas völlig Neues kreieren. Ich habe direkt selbst angefangen mir eine Wagon auszudenken. ☺️ Allerdings hat all das auch seine Schattenseiten und der Zug wird von einer zerstörerischen Macht bedroht. Insgesamt hat die Autorin es geschafft, perfekt die Waage zu halten zwischen poetischen, nachdenklichen Zwischentönen, einer starken Charakterentwicklung und einem kreativen Worldbuilding, das seines Gleichen sucht. Ich kann das Buch nur wärmstens empfehlen. 💗

Ein einzigartiger Fantasyroman mit Tiefgang. Gemeinsam mit Raya und Q lernt man den Elsewhere Express kennen und lieben. Doch der Roman ist nicht nur auf ästhetischer Ebene schön sondern behandelt auch Fragen über den Sinn des Lebens und ob die Flucht in Tagträume diesen ersetzten kann.
