4,5 stars. I liked it a tiny bit less than the first book, because I missed Sam and their interaction. Simon and Meg had some really hilarious moments together. Hopefully there is more of that in the next book.

Unfortunately a not so strong second book of the series with a love interest that makes me feel uncomfortable...a lot... Now, to read or not to read book 3? Meg is still living in the courtyard with the Others, she's still dealing with all the new impressions of her everyday life, still dealing with finding her place amidst predators, who can (which is the only actual development of the story in my opinion) can sometimes also be very nice with her and see her as a friend. Then of course there's some crisis, some drama, and some fighting included. I liked the new location introduced and the historical and geographical background information given. I liked the humor (even though not as good as in the first book) and that the relationship between humans and Others is slowly changing in many ways and I'd have liked to see more of this especially from human side, but I guess, the author wanted to save something up for the next books. And that was my problem with it (at least one of it)...the story sometimes seemed to just fill another book, not really like a story you could dive into as it was in the first book. There could be more background information on the Others, more daily life in the courtyard away from the market area, more...I don't know how to put it, but to me the book lacked and in comparison to this promising starter into the series, reading the second book was a little disappointing for me. But now to the thing I REALLY have problems with: the upcoming romance or at least this feeling of a romantic promise in between two characters...and even though the Others can shape into human form, they are depicted in the book as still being formed by their other shape's habits. So for example Crows like all the shiny things even when they're in human form or Wolves still sniff at people...so the reader gets the feeling that they are still inheriting a lot of their animal features...and then a love interest? What! Please not!!!
