About the book

From author Sarah MacLean, a razor-sharp, wildly sexy novel about a wealthy New England family's long-overdue reckoning . . . and the one week that threatens to tear them apart.

"Addictive."-Ali Hazelwood

"A gripping inheritance drama, wrapped around a swoony summer romance."-The New York Times Book Review

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME, THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, NPR, KIRKUS REVIEWS

Alice isn't like the other Storm siblings. While the rest stayed to battle for their parents' approval, attention, and untold billions, she left, building her own life beyond the family's name and influence. Nothing could induce her to come back, except the shocking death of her larger-than-life father. Now back on the family's private island, she plans to keep her head down, pay the last of her respects and leave the minute the funeral is over.

Unfortunately, her father had other plans. The eccentric, manipulative patriarch left his widow and their grown children a final challenge - an inheritance game designed to humiliate, devastate and unravel the Storm family in ways both petty and life-altering. The rules of the game are clear: stay on the island for one week, complete the tasks, receive the inheritance.

One week on Storm Island is an impossible task for Alice. Every corner of the sprawling old house is bursting with dysfunctional chaos: Her older sister's secret love affair. Her brother's incessant mansplaining. Her sister-in-law's unapologetic greed. Her younger sister's obsession with 'vibes'. Her mother's penchant for stirring up competition between her children. And all under the stern, watchful gaze of Jack Dean, her father's enigmatic, unfairly good-looking, second-in-command. It will be a miracle if Alice manages to escape the week unscathed.

A story about the transformative power of grief, love and family, this luscious novel is at once deliciously clever and surprisingly tender, exploring past secrets, present truths and futures forged in the wake of wild summer storms.

These Summer Storms In this book, we follow Alice Storm, one of the four Storm siblings. The Storm family is well known for their father, who is extremely wealthy and, as a result, wields a great deal of influence. We follow Alice as she return to her family’s private island for the first time in five years following her father’s death, where she meets up with the whole family. I don’t think I need to tell you that families are complicated and that the reunion doesn’t exactly go smoothly. But what happens when, even now after his death, Alice is not free from her father’s schemes? Will she manage to endure a week with her family and all the drama that comes with it? What happens when she learns things she should never have known? I have to say, I was a bit confused at the start of the book that we were given so much about trains. In hindsight, it makes sense. Still, the fun facts, or rather, the history of the trains threw me off a bit. But once I got further into the book and we started learning more about Alice, her life and her past, I was completely hooked. I mean, who wouldn’t want to hear the crazy and dark stories that happen on a private island far away from ordinary people? So I’m just thinking, count me in! I mean, I really liked how deeply we got to know Alice, and also the fact that we don’t just follow her perspective, but get a chapter dedicated to each of her siblings in the book. That made it easier to empathise with them, as it’s a bit difficult for an outsider to understand inner conflicts. I really liked the romance element in this book, but what bothered me a bit were all the lies. Personally, I absolutely can’t stand it when you’re lied to from start to finish, yet you still stick with that person. What I also really liked was the insight into this rich world, as there are many things you can’t quite grasp or imagine, and it was exciting to let your mind wander off into a new world. To avoid giving anything away, I can’t really say too much, but I hope I’ve perhaps drawn the attention of one or two of you to this book! I give the book 4/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #inkandanna #thesesummerstorms #sarahmaclean #summerread

Wow! Mit der Erwartung einer regulären Romanze reingegangen aber das familiäre Inheritance-Game war eine willkommene Abwechslung. Loved it!!
