Description

After posting a negative review of a horror novel, a woman staying at an isolated beach house begins to wonder if the author is a little touchy—or very, very dangerous—in this pulse-pounding novel of psychological suspense and terror from the critically acclaimed author of No Exit and Hairpin Bridge.Emma Carpenter lives in isolation with her golden retriever Laika, house-sitting an old beachfront home on the rainy Washington coast. Her only human contact is her enigmatic old neighbor, Deek, and (via text) the house’s owner, Jules. One day, she reads a poorly written—but gruesome—horror novel by the author H. G. Kane, and posts a one-star review that drags her into an online argument with none other than the author himself. Soon after, disturbing incidents start to occur at night. To Emma, this can’t just be a coincidence. It was strange enough for this author to bicker with her online about a lousy review; could he be stalking her, too?As Emma digs into Kane’s life and work, she learns he has published sixteen other novels, all similarly sadistic tales of stalking and murder. But who is he? How did he find her? And what else is he capable of?Displaying his trademark command of rapid-fire pacing, unnerving atmosphere, and razor-sharp characterization, Taylor Adams once again delivers a diabolically disturbing—and deadly—game of cat and mouse.

Really liked the beginning and amazing plot twists, "only" three stars because I was reading it for a longer time and because of that it lost its thrill a little

I am confused

I had this book preordered cause I was so excited to read it… well now a year later I finally picked it up and I’m glad I did. The story was very intense but I feel like I didn’t understand anything after the 300 page mark 😭

Phew.. the beginning and ending were so tedious to get through. The book sorf of hit its stride in the middle there but I was constantly itching to finally finish this

This was tense, intriguing and had some good twists but most of all it was absolutely hilarious! Every single cliché fit like pot to kettle on the killer, from the fedora and katana to saying the main character just doesn’t get it because she’s a female. Even towards the end of the book there were still new details that had me laughing out loud with how ridiculous this killer is. I also loved the many instances of unreliable narration that were just as hilarious: “He shrieks through gnashed teeth, a girlish scream.” “It barely hurt. He didn’t scream or even grunt. He had always been a well-muscled fighter with exceptional pain tolerance.” And most importantly: the dog is fine

I was really intrigued at first, but it lost me. I was honestly just bored out of my mind. Meh.
