Darren Shan, a typical schoolboy with a fascination for spiders, finds his life upended after attending a mysterious freak show with his best friend, Steve Leonard. At the show, they encounter a variety of bizarre and supernatural performers, but Darren is especially drawn to a spider named Madam Octa, owned by the enigmatic Mr. Crepsley. Driven by his fascination, Darren makes a fateful decision to steal Madam Octa, triggering a series of catastrophic events. The theft leads to tragedy when Madam Octa bites Steve. Desperate to save his friend, Darren approaches Mr. Crepsley for help, offering his own freedom in exchange for Steve's life. I really enjoyed this book; it reminded me of Treasure Island (young boy leaves his family and embarks on an adventure). Although the writing felt slightly silly at times, it was nonetheless very engaging. I finished the book in a few hours and am eagerly anticipating continuing the series.
