About Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) war das zehnte von dreizehn Kindern. Als 15-jähriger lief er von Zuhause weg, nahm auf der Seite der Union am Bürgerkrieg teil und zeichnete sich durch Tapferkeit aus. Berühmt wurde er als Journalist. Neben seinem sarkastischen Werk The Devil's Dictionary (1906) beruht Bierces Anerkennung vor allem auf zwei Sammelbänden: Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1892) und Can Such Things Be? (1893). Mit 70 Jahren unternahm Bierce eine Reise nach Mexiko, mitten in die Revolution, wo sich seine Spur im Gefolge von Pancho Villa für immer verlor.
