This book leans into sports romance with obsessive tendencies, borderline stalking behavior, and a possessive male lead, all wrapped in emotional growth and healing. If you like your romance intense and questionable, plus hockey metaphors that hit harder than a body check on ice, this one delivers with heat and heart.
I really enjoyed this book. It begins as a relatively relaxed romance, with the usual stalking tendencies and possessiveness that are an obvious hallmark of morally grey men. Monroe has a traumatic past with a truly awful mother. These experiences shape her, and out of fear of becoming as dependent on men as she is, she prefers to put up a wall (because resolving trauma in a healthy way in this kind of book would not really be helpful for the plot, but it would be for the person...). Lincoln has a similar, albeit different, traumatic past. Instead of putting up walls, he becomes a stalker who not only wants to know everything about the woman he has fallen madly in love with after seeing a photo and exchanging a few text messages (which, of course, happens all the time), but also wants to possess her. And yes, possess is really the right word here. Lincoln himself, despite his blatantly psychopathic tendencies, is a sunny boy who looks great and is extremely rich and charming. Everyone's darling, in other words. About two-thirds of the way through the book, I wasn't sure if I had accidentally picked up a romance novel. Fortunately, it then went so downhill that you can definitely call it dark. The walking red flag Lincoln not only drugs Monroe after she has seen the full extent of his obsession and assault, he also locks her in his flat until she forgives him and loves him again. And surprise: She does. I even find it understandable this time, because this relationship from the traumatic hell simply gives them what they both lacked: someone who loves them so obsessively that they would rather die than let the other go. My new dream couple... Let's just hope they somehow manage to heal each other.
