Spinoff series in the Necessary Evils universe
I finished the main series last year, and I am glad to be back in this universe. If you are unfamiliar, I recommend reading the other books first since this takes place afterward (to be specific, after "Maniac", but before the short stories collection "Family & Felonies", which I also read already since I didn't know that, but it was just short mentions about this couple there). Also there are cameos of the already established couples. So I won't explain the general concept of vigilante killers the series has 😂 This spinoff series focuses on each of "Jericho's Boys", as the title says. This first one is about Arsen. When he is on a job to kill a known child abuser, he encounters Ever, who was also being held there against his will. He saves him from that horrible place and lets him stay in his apartment over Jericho's garage. Ever has to learn what living a normal life means, finding kindness and love. As always, we have dark topics, but no dark romance. Their relationship is super sweet, even though it's almost insta-love again. I am used to it with this series, so I didn't mind 😂 Of course, realistically, it's not a good idea to get into a relationship right after escaping such a traumatic situation, but you know, that's what fiction is for. I think it was still handled well, and the trauma was portrayed in a way that made sense. Ever learns about boundaries and is finally able to make his own choices. I am just generally a big fan of stories where people who never had that, experience kindness and learn to really trust someone for the first time 🥹❤️ There were also so many sweet moments with the garage family. I loved the scenes where everyone brings Ever their favorite food for him to try. The relationship was also really nice. It just felt natural the way they were with each other (even if it was relatively quick). I had to grin a lot at their interactions, or was just like, "They are so cute!" 🥰 Just the end was a bit less interesting for me since it followed the typical concept for these books. There wasn't really much of a plot after Ever was saved (which I didn't mind), just him learning to live life and falling in love, but of course there had to be some more murder 👀 So, in true Mulvaney fashion there is a bad guy takedown at the end, same as always. I'd say, if you like the other books, you'll like this one as well. It's actually one of my favorites now (the others are Unhinged, Moonstruck & Maniac) 🖤
