Tolkien started my love for fantasy but ever since the first time reading it when I was a teen, I have only watched the movies which are my favourites of all time. I had only read it in the established translation to German but knowing the genius of Tolkien, I have long wanted to read it in its original English version. Now for reading I didn’t have the time but I listened to the audiobook read by Andy Serkins. He is an amazing voice actor and this added yet another beautiful layer (although heavily influenced by the movie version and his co-actors) I forgot plenty of minor details from the first read (because impatient and action-loving teen me wanted the plot not the blablabla surrounding it). First, LotR is a musical, and I’ll die on that hill. What the hell? 😅 there is so so so much singing in every chapter. And I completely forgot about it Second, the amount of details had me in awe. Especially considering that the entire 3 books of LotR are only like a half page in the Simarillion, I cannot even fathom the mind that created such an extensive universe. Also considering that fantastical universe settings like Middle Earth including all its races, history and distinct cultures were unheard of back then. I will admit that while impressive, it falls out of our current reading taste. And in comparison to what the movie came out, Jackson feels like a great editor. In my opinion, LotR directors cut is the best book-movie adaptation. Third, it made me want to delve deeper into the Tolkien universe and I thinking read more, Numenor and Gondolin await 💜

Kleiner Disclaimer zu Beginn: meine Ausgabe wurde nicht von Rob Inglis, sondern von Phil Dragash gelesen. Die hab ich hier in der App nur leider nicht gefunden, aber die Rezi wird sich natürlich darauf beziehen. Zum Inhalt will ich gar nicht viel schreiben. Herr der Ringe ist einfach meine Lieblingsreihe mit meinen Lieblingscharakteren. Da kann und will ich nichts kritisieren, es macht einfach immer wieder Spaß, nach Mittelerde zurückzukehren. Das Hörbuch fand ich super. Mit Soundtracks aus dem Film hinterlegt kam nochmal eine ganz neue Spannung auf. Ich hatte oft Gänsehaut und fand richtig toll, dass so Film und Buch ein bisschen verbunden wurden. Die Stimmen kann man echt gut auseinanderhalten. Vor allem herausheben möchte ich die Szenen mit den Nazgûl. Ich konnte richtig die Angst spüren, die sie verbreiten. Auch bin ich begeistert, dass Glorfindel endlich eine eigene Stimme hat. Er ist einer meiner Lieblingscharaktere und wird zu oft übersehen. Aber hier wurde er super gesprochen und es kamen so viele Emotionen rüber. Ich bin zu einem richtigen Fan des Hörbuchs geworden, obwohl ich normalerweise lieber lese als höre. Ich werde es auf zukünftigen langen Fahrten oder auch einfach so sicher noch häufiger hören. Jetzt geht es direkt weiter mit dem zweiten Teil. Ich freue mich schon richtig.
