Kate Daniels is my all time favorite kickass character. The HUMOR of the dialoug, the worldbuilding, the slow burn, the epic overarching threat.... its Chefs Kiss. The Covers are horrible but let me tell you. This is the best urban fantasy series out there. Ilona Andrews is my TOP TIER author and always a must read.

As a true sci-fi fan with a boyfriend who loves fantasy and recommended this book, I started reading this book with doubt not knowing if I would like it or not. Would 'Magic Bites' be my cup of tea? And honestly, I have to say this book in its true essence is just good! It's very interesting and has a good pace. As a reader you're hooked to know how the story will further develop. However, I am not used to a lot of different types of creatures and sometimes I had issues with remembering who is who and what group they belong to and what they did throughout the story. I think this is something I personally have to get used to. Overall, I had a very nice read and will definitely read the following books in this series. Maybe, I'll even become a fan of fantasy along the way

This was … okay, I guess? I needed half of the book to warm up to the plot. It’s the writing, I think. It’s just not gripping and it didn’t suck me in. This and the continuous pissing contests. What I did like (at least most of the time) was Kate Daniels, our heroine, even if she often acted stupidly when she tried to be brave and give people (especially men) her no-shit-attitude. But she definitely is honest, funny and strong. Yes, she does make mistakes, but she acknowledges them as well. Her maybe-someday-love interest is an alpha male, which seems to be a must in books about shapeshifters (still waiting for books to not succumb to this cliché), who often got on my nerves but who seems to have some potential. There were other intriguing characters as well and I hope that following books will concentrate more on them. The worldbuilding isn’t mind-blowing but still interesting, kind of dystopian, but could’ve used more explanations, especially concerning the magic system. I mean, humans seem to possess magic, but what are the boundaries and do all humans have magic? Etc. So, while it definitely didn’t knock me off my feet, this book left enough questions unanswered (like Kate’s ancestry and the power that comes with it for example) that I want to read the second book.
