The Monster Killer who grew a heart

This ebook is available for free on the author's page. It is a short prequel to the already published book "Elegy of a fragmented Vineyard" and can be read both before or after finishing the main story. PLOT In this world, some people are born with an additional organ, which grands them magical abilities. Some of the reigning courts have taken to harvesting these organs and transplanting them to specific individuals to turn them into skilled warriors, healers, or otherwise useful servants. One of the individuals gifted with a transplanted organ is Runith, an experienced but reckless monster hunter. Runith gains the ability to speak to animals and monsters alike. A skill he is meant to use to subdue and kill monsters more easily, for the greater good of his court. But once Runith is able to speak the monsters' language, he is thrown into a rapid change of morals and his view of the world. REVIEW I was a little lost and overwhelmed at the beginning, looking at all the information of places, titles, and monsters thrown in. But that quickly dissolved, and I got absorbed into the story. The main character, Runith, takes the spotlight, of course. But he has a few companions with him whose personality shines through despite their side role. Coincidentally, Runith appears just as oblivious and naive in regards to the whole organ transplant magic and which powers they entain. So the reader learns all this information together with Runith (though I'll go ahead and say I was a little faster at picking up on it than he was). Runith's journey, physically as well as morally, is fluid and told beautifully, and I caught myself getting a little emotional at the end of it. There are unique monsters, political tension, and character development. I could tell from this novella that there's a big complex world with politics and magic systems at the root of this story. The author doesn't go into too much detail, given the limited time, but it's clear that there is so much more to explore in the main novel, which I'll likely pick up later on.
