I am upset. Annabeth Albert is one of my would read any day authors. This new series has been mind numbing and underwhelming. I absolutely adored her SEALs and any book that came after that. (Looking at my Goodreads stats I have read 34 of her books) I was thrilled when I heard that she was going to go back to military/bodyguard stuff because thats the kind of M/M romance that keeps me up at night. THOUGH LUCK was already boring. I expected more from a stalker story. This one? I DNF @ 90% I feels like all her protagonists have lost their spark. They sound all the same to me and the plot is as boring as it can be. I thought I might be the problem, that I burned myself out by reading to much of the same stories but just to confirm my suspicions I read CUP OF JOE and it was everything I know and love. How can a book about a barista and a electrician have more spark and action than a bodyguard story? The plot is weak, the characters sound all to similar and are annoying, the love story is monotone, the spicy scenes are uninspired. I think what I dislike the most is how bored I am. The romantic tension is dissolved after a few chapters there is basically nothing happening. I don’t think a book always needs a one-character-is-hard-to-get plot but give us something? Where is the romantic build up? Where is the conflict? I know she prefers low angst but if she is going to write about bodyguards she needs to understand the crowd. I don’t know if Annabeth is running out of ideas or if her new style it just not for me but I really really really hope that her upcoming books will win me back. I love her and I wont stop reading her books because she has written so many of my favourites. Here is a list of things I wish for: - More romantic buildup/tenting (would love a slow burn that keeps me on my feet) - Third person pov - More plot outside of the relationship - More involvement of other characters to combat couple fatigue - More action and danger (it’s a bodyguard story!)
