Hit man x Witness
Jack watched a murder and got a new identity. D is a hit man and got blackmailed into killing him. He refused and they are on the run together.
Story was alright. The criminal aspects were good enough. The way they got close wasn't bad. It was relatively slow, espicially admitting to feelings.
But seriously, the author has no idea how sex works. The first time there was no prep, no lube, just straight (ha) in. At least they got lube later on but they never prepped. "He was big - bigger than Jack remembered -" no he was not. How tf do you think it works?
Rant over.
I came across Zero at the Bone after reading Shades of Gray by Brooke McKinley. I read a couple of reviews on Brookes book and some people mentioned Zero at the Bone and since I really adored Shades of Gray I ordered it immediately and I wasn’t disappointed. Absolutely NOT DISAPPOINTED AT ALL. Hot damn, this book is fabulous.
Zero at the Bone is about Jack who is a maxillofacial surgeon. Yeah I had to look that up though, never heard of that profession before. I knew he was a doctor though but this profession was pretty new to me. Now I know that he’s basically a dentist, a surgeon who treats injuries, diseases and defects in the skull, jaw, neck and face. So thank you Jane Seville for teaching me something new. After witnessing a mob hit in an underground garage, Jack is put into protective custody to make sure he stays alive until the trial begins and he can testify.
D is a hit man and his credo is to kill bad people who deserve to die and Jack sure doesn’t fall into this category since he is just an innocent witness. Even though the hit is against all what D believes he must accept it because he’s been blackmailed into killing Jack by whomever. Tracking him down is the easiest of all for D so it doesn’t take long to find him but once he’s there it’s his conscience that keeps him from killing Jack. When he’s face to face with Jack he immediately recognizes that Jack is a good man and that he does not deserve to die so instead of killing him, D “kidnaps” Jack to protect him and to make sure that he stays alive till the day of the trial so that he can testify. Now they are on the run – together and D is willing to protect Jack with his own life. Despite the fact that the two of them couldn’t be any more different from each other they are forced to work together to survive this dangerous journey. While on the run both men forge a strong bond that develops into a deep yet unexpected loving relationship.
I really don’t want to give away about the plot too much though, because I really don’t want to spoil anything for you.
The further we get in the story the more they find each other drawn to each other. Jack, the successful doctor with his so called perfect life is able to slowly get D to open up a little. He finally gets D to accept that he is in fact not just the killer he thinks he is; he manages to make him believe that he’s more than that; that he’s a man who of course has done bad things, very bad things but who has also done a lot of good things in his life. I absolutely adored the way their relationship developed from their first meeting to the end of the story.
They had to go to a lot of trouble to finally be together though but despite all that their relationship is so honest and real and I can’t put into words how much I loved them, together and separately.
Jack and D are both such amazing characters, I don’t even know where to start because 1. I really don’t want to spoil anything for you and 2. I simply have no words for the perfection of Jack and D, the whole story and – of course – their relationship. They both grew so much on me; all I can think of right now is Jack and D. When I find myself in a fun, awkward or boring situation, I always wonder what they would do; what D would say, probably something inappropriate and Jack would be all sweet and nice and well, maybe even a little angry. I just love their chemistry. I love how they act and behave when they are together, I love how they talk to each other and what they say and how they say it and I love that D, a hit man who has killed so many people in his life already, turns into a cute little puppy when Jack is around. I also love how protective D is over Jack. He would do anything to save his life; he would even be willing to give his own life in order to save his and – I don’t even know why I think this is so romantic but hell yeah, it is so romantic.
This book made me cry – a lot actually, it ripped my heart apart, but it also made me laugh, giggle, it made me sigh and it made me go all “aww” all the time.
I have to admit it took me a while to get used to D’s language. English isn’t my mother tongue so sometimes it was hard for me to understand what he was saying, especially at the beginning but it only took me a couple of pages to get used to his language. Also I think the font is very tiny, I feel like it took me forever to read only one page. Actually I am a fast reader but it took me quite a while to read this book, which isn’t bad though, because this way I was able to spend more time with D and Jack and I sure loved being part of their story, even if it was just for a couple of hours.
The secondary characters are also very well written. The book isn’t that long though, it has only like 300 pages so you may expect that some of the secondary characters are just there to “fill” the story but in this case it wasn’t like that. All secondary characters where important in some way and – as I’ve mentioned already – very well written. From the agents who helped Jack to the bad guys who tried to kill him – I loved all of them. Well of course I didn’t love the bad guys though because of course I didn’t want them to either kill Jack or D but it all just made sense.
What I also absolutely enjoyed was that we learned so much about being a hit man as well as a witness or an agent. It was so interesting and exciting to read about all that and also about the Witness Protection program. I absolutely loved their dangerous and exciting journey but I also really enjoyed the more relaxing times, especially those times when they finally sat (or lay) down and got to know each other in all kind of possible ways. Watching those two men falling for each other was so romantic and heart-warming, I wish I could go back in time to unread the book only so that I can read it again for the first time because it really is that good.
This book would also make such a great movie, two heroes, a bad and a good guy, the tortured soul, the nice guy trying to save him; both men trying to save each other, lots of thrills, guns, blood and – of course – a wonderful emotional love story with some super hot sex scenes. I wish there was a movie like that. I really wish though. Is there any movie like that out there? If anybody knows of any movie please let me know, I’m dying to see a movie like that. I’d spend all my money to see it.
This whole story is so intense; it’s gripping from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down. This is one of those books that kept me up all night. I stayed up until – I don’t know – maybe 2 am even though I had to be at work at around 7 but I just couldn’t put the book down. Now being at work all I can think of is Jack and D.
And in case you were wondering, now, the sex scenes are not the main focus of the book, yes there’s a lot of sex and a lot of swearing but the emotional bond between them definitely is the focus of the book, as well as their character development.
Also the writing is beautiful, the dialogues perfect. There are so many great quotes in this book, sayings about life and love and trust and honesty and everything is just so perfect, I almost marked every single page with a post it because I wanted to mark my favorite scenes/moments to make it easier for me to find them so that I could easily reread them whenever I felt like it but honestly, I pretty much marked every single page, so I guess I just need to reread the whole book very soon.
What I also really loved are the inner monologues. Damn, some of them really gave me goosebumps. There’s for example that inner monologue that made me cry buckets of tears:
Jus hold me a little longer, Jack. Tell me again that ya wanna be with me, fer real, cross yer heart 'n' let me know you ain't foolin' cause I dunno how or when it happen but somehow I come ta need ya like air, like blood. Touch me again like ya do with them gentle hands make me feel like somethin' precious. Say it again that ya love me, cause hearin' that was like openin' up some big bottomless well that ran dry years back and it cain't never hear it enough, but once more, one more time and maybe I'll believe it a little more, and then a little more the next time, till someday I believe it fer true enough ta be able to say it back ta you like y'oughta hear it said cause God knows I love you more'n my own life, more'n anythin' in this world, but it cain't get outta me yet cause I still ain't the man I need ta be, the man who's gonna stand before you and declare.
At first I thought that Jack was my favorite, but now after reading the whole book I can’t decide. They are both such interesting, special, complex and fun characters and both of them are hands down two of the sexiest guys I’ve ever read about in a book and I think I could never choose a favorite, I just love them both so much because they are both so different and I love how they’ve both changed because of each other. Those two are meant to be together, they just are and they sure as hell know that.
I love this book. I can’t even tell you how much I do. It’s such a beautiful story, so well written with such amazing characters. If you haven’t read it yet, you definitely should, if not, you’ll miss out on something amazing; something mind blowing and I bet you don’t want that. Also you’ll miss out on some really sexy scenes and I also bet you don’t want that either haha I can highly recommend this book, it’s just soo good and I really do hope that she will maybe write a sequel sometime. There are three more short stories about D and Jack on her website available as a free download. I’ve already read one of them and loved it just as much as I loved the book. I only hated that it’s so short but well. I really do want to read more about them. Please Jane Seville, if you happen to read this please write a sequel. I need one; I really do and I’m sure everyone else wants a sequel as well.
I read the graphic novel to this gem about a year ago and oh boy - it was just as good. I flew through this book within 4 days and I loved every single minute of it. The book is a hidden gem, a beautiful romance story between two men that couldn't be more different to each other. D is a great character with a dark past and Jack accepts him the way he is the more D opens up to him. A beautiful story and a beautiful plot. Worth reading!
