I have made it my mission to read more classics and decided to start with Cyrano. As I‘ve unfortunately forgotten all the french I‘ve learned in school, I decided to read this in English, specifically the english translation by Anthony Burgess as it was recommended to me. I knew the story from various modern adaptations (I think my first contact with the story of Cyrano was the german movie “The most beautiful girl in the world“, in which a teen with a really big nose who likes to do free-style rap falls in love with his classmate and no, i am not making that up). However, I really loved the original story as well. The translation worked really well. I laughed out loud at certain points and also cried a little (shh don‘t tell anyone).

Ein zeitloses Meisterwerk, dessen Erzählung schon unzählige Male verfilmt und verformt wurde. Die Tragikomödie ist von der Geschichte des großnasigen Cyrano her ein Sinnbild für Aufopferung und Liebe. Abzug gibt es für die teils schwierige und langatmige Ausdrucksform, die auch dem Erscheinungsdatum geschuldet sein kann.

Manchmal müssen es Klassiker sein. Ich liebe die Geschichte um Cyrano und Roxane, mir war nur nicht bewusst, dass der gesamte Roman in Versform bzw. wie ein Theaterstück geschrieben wurde, was meinen Lesefluss etwas gestört hat. Dennoch wurde mir oft sehr warm ums Herz. Das Ende zerreißt einem das Herz.
