Mit heutigen Standards an Spannung und Story Structure kann das Buch von Aldiss nicht mithalten. Dem Leser sollte klar sein, dass er einen Klassiker aus dem Jahr 1961 liest, der vor allem durchs Worldbuilding begeistert. Der Plot ist eher rudimentär. Man folgt der Hauptfigur im Grunde bei ihrer Reise durch die Welt und von einer Bedrohung zur nächsten. Das Hörbuch wird von Sprecher Achim Buch wirklich toll gelesen. Ich musste mich am Anfang, vielleicht bis zur Mitte ungefähr, etwas durchbeißen, am Ende hatte es sich dann aber für mich gelohnt.

There are two things that make the book truely unique: the highly creative world where plants are the dominant species on earth and humans only one of the little creatures living beside them, and the characters, which are primitive humans with simple thoughts and needs that made me think differently of them than I would normally of characters making the same decisions and having similar conversations. The whole novel is basically just a discovery of the world Aldiss has created and that felt enough. There are so many things to discover. However, maybe not every idea is worth sustaining. I got a bit sick of some guys following our main cast around and one species near the end didn't do much for me, but that's really nit-picking.
