What if humans lived for centuries long? Would we appreciate life and family more? The only catch: don’t fall in love.
Tom Hazard is a man who ages very slowly. He’s lived for over 400 years but yet only looks to be around 40 years old. Every 10 or so years, he has to change professions to get rid of suspicion. While working in London as a history teacher, he struggles with loneliness and his search for happiness. When he falls in love, he starts to question the rules that have controlled his life and kept him safe all these years. Matt Haig combines historical fiction, fantasy as well as romance in a way that makes the story interesting and one of a kind. The idea of living for centuries is what make me buy and start reading the book, but what made me really interested in continuing reading was the ideas of loneliness, love and learning how to appreciate life. The pacing can be slow at times, but the flashbacks to different historical periods makes the story rich and engaging. Overall, it really encourages the reader to focus on the present and to value the time on earth that they have. I’d definitely recommend this novel to someone who enjoys reflective stories with a mix of history and fantasy.
