3.5 after reading the analyses of people who actually got the deeper meaning of the book
I just love Han Kang's style. After every book of hers, I'm in awe of the way she describes her characters and their actions. Based on other reviews I was expecting it to be even more disturbing than it was. But for me, it had the perfect level of horror elements to literary prowess. The way she calls out the patriarchy and also the way we interact with one another. Using Vegetarianism and the protagonists wish to become a plant as a means to convey how difficult it is for us to really understand what another person is thinking and being motivated by. It was also incredibly telling how the protagonist tried to minimize her violence against animals only to be met with more violence from her family than ever before. I also adored the relationship between the sisters.
A very weird, captivating story. This book left quite an impact on me and will probably stay in mind for quite some time. There are so many different topics and themes explored in this very extraordinary storyline. But it probably won’t be everyones’ cup of tea.
