Jen Campbell kenne ich nicht nur von ihren wirklich lustigen Büchern aus der Serie „Kuriose Kundenfragen in Buchhandlungen“, ich bewundere sie zudem als sehr kompetente und belesene YouTuberin, die immer eine interessante Anekdote zu erzählen weiß. Nun ist ihr neuestes Werk für Erwachsene erschienen: eine Kurzgeschichtensammlung, inspiriert von Sagen und Märchen. Ich bin eigentlich kein Fan von Short Stories und ging ein wenig skeptisch an die Lektüre heran. Aber schon die erste Geschichte hat mich komplett in ihren Bann gezogen. Es sind so wundervolle skurrile, ungewöhnliche, poetische Erzählungen – ich wünschte, es wären noch viele mehr gewesen! Es ist tatsächlich ein sehr außergewöhnliches Buch, das sich nur schwer mit etwas Bekanntem vergleichen lässt. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich alle Handlungen komplett verstanden habe (dazu sind sie zu „anders“), aber ich liebe jede einzelne! Momentan besitze ich „The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night“ nur als eBook, aber ich werde mir zu Weihnachten das Druckwerk selbst schenken, so schön finde ich es. Ein wundervolles Buch, das ich jedem ans Herz legen möchte, der ungewöhnliche Geschichten liebt.

I liked this series of short stories very much. If you follow the author on any social media channel you probably could guess right, what type her stories would be. The stories contain fairy tale elements as well as magical realism and were sometimes a bit creepy. But I like such uncommon ideas, which take me out of my comfort zone and found them quite refreshing and remarkable.

Just to put it here: I dnf'd this book! I am so so sorry for giving this book a One-Star-Rating. I tried to understand the stories that I read, but the message or point for each story was like non-existent. To take the story "In the Dark" as an example: A man comes into the kitchen of a woman for no reason, has nothing to say, appears to be a pilot, leaves after a few moments and the womans reaction is that she will not tell anyone that the man was there. Story ends... Overall the stories were bland, confusing and also (sadly for my taste) not that well written. I wished to give this book a better rating, but sorry - a dnf-book only gets 1 Star from me...
