Avi’s “Sophia’s War” is a gripping and touching coming-of-age story set during the American Revolutionary War. The novel revisits well-known historical figures such as Benedict Arnold, John André, Robert Townsend, and Benjamin Tallmadge—yet it does so through the fresh perspective of Sophia, a young girl whose personal journey gives new life to this familiar history.

Set in British-occupied New York, Sophia doesn’t just witness the events unfolding—she becomes actively involved in a web of espionage, betrayal, and inner conflict. One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in Sophia’s personal development. Her youthful and somewhat naïve patriotism is put to the test through real, often painful experiences, ultimately shaping her into a determined young woman who chooses to stand by her values. The emotional depth of the story becomes especially clear through Sophia’s complex relationship with John André. Torn between her duty to her country and her feelings for him, Sophia’s inner conflict is portrayed with nuance and sincerity. Avi makes her exceptional intuition and “luck” believable—Sophia is not simply a flawless heroine, but a clever girl whose very politeness and unassuming nature make her the perfect spy. Stylistically, the book is highly accessible: short chapters keep the pace brisk, and the second half in particular stands out thanks to the shifting perspectives between Sophia and André. The suspense remains high—even for readers who already know how the historical events unfold. Fans of the series Turn will especially enjoy encountering familiar names presented in a new and richly detailed way. What stands out most is the novel’s refusal to fall into conventional romantic tropes. Instead of ending up with a man, Sophia chooses to remain true to her ideals. The decision she makes as a seemingly naïve girl at the beginning becomes a hard-earned reality by the end. In that sense, her journey mirrors a true coming-of-age arc—culminating in her transformation into what André himself calls a “lady.”
