A case of "right tea wrong cup“

I finished this book the morning after watching "All of Us Strangers" again, and I think it is a pretty good book-movie combination. In a way, both hit the same note on different instruments, playing a similar song, as they portray the life of gay people that has been heavily influenced by societal stigma. For me , " We Could Be So Good" evens out somewhere between "Ride the Storm" from Goldford and "The Power of Love" from Frankie Goes To Hollywood. I really appreciate the point of view from both characters, as it shows two men coming from very different ends, not only socially and regarding their upbringing but also their experiences, or lack of experience, with being gay and what that means in a time when you had to take too many risks and face too many limitations when it comes to just being yourself, always walking on the edge of exclusion and shame. In the beginning , I really liked the writing style. It was kind of refreshing and found the right angle to allow the workings of the characters to unfold in a natural, real way. You get very quickly attached to the characters and care for them. Yet, after the first half of the book, it felt a bit underwhelming, not matching what was going on in the story, and hit the "show, don't tell " mark a bit too often for my liking, taking some of it away from the characters' journey. Both characters have my heart, but I have to admit that Nick's parts of the story, especially in the second half, were more interesting to follow than Andy's. I think a tighter plot and 40 pages less , or a more collected writing, would have done it for me; still, it is a solid book and I am certain that I will revisit it sometime in the future:)
