Mr and Mrs Ramsy had eight children. They went on vacation to island Sky. Besides them there were several other guests painter Lily, poet Carmichael, Mr Banks, etc. Plot is simple: first part - James Ramsy wants to go to the lighthouse, society and family functions; second part - Mrs Maknab years later looks after the house; third - Mr Ramsy and two of his kids (Can and James) go to the lighthouse. The signature stylistic feature, which made Virginia Woolf famous, is stream of consciousness. Characters think, feel, contemplate and don’t actually do much.
