Auf jeden Fall mal was komplett anderes!
I was in a weird mixed mood about this book. I had preordered it, cause I'm a big fan of Marie Lu's Legend trilogy and wanted to give this series another chance after Warcross didn't completely win me over. It was mostly the insta love that really annoyed me and made the first booka kinda annoying experience, even though I loved loads of the supporting characters (just not the main ones so much). So let's get to Wildcard. I struggled getting into this for a bit. First, it was a bit annoying that everything happened in just a couple days. Like the whole story, which is A LOT, loads of things, happens in practically four day. I get the urgency in this case, but I still think it should have at least been a couple weeks. This just felt a bit rushed. Emika is kind of a blank character still. I don't really feel for her or with her, but this book made me like Hideo a bit more, even though I still don't get how and why he fell for her. Like she is obsessed with him, has been forever, that is just again said in this book, but he? I don't get it. Anyway, the romance isn't that important in this book and I enjoyed that. What I also enjoyed is the extra time Roshan and Tremaine got in this one. That was good content and I wanted more ever time I got a a tiny bit of story. They were way more interesting than Emika and Hideo tbh, but I already said how I liked the supporting characters way more. Anyway, Zero. I really liked how that story was wrapped up. All the twists and turns about his life and what happened to him were really good and actually kinda jarring. I liked how his storyline ended though and that takes me to my favourite part. The end. Whenever someone asks me about my favourite ending ever, I say the ending of Champion from the Legend books. It's just such a good ending and this one again showed me, how well Marie Lu does endings. They are realistic and natural and completely lack annoying happy ever after stuff. The ending is what really pulled me in again and made me rate this one higher than Warcross. Overall it wasn't super catching and had quite a lot of filler content for a story taking place over literal four days. But that ending was so good and it wrapped everything up perfectly, while still leaving enough unsaid. In comparison to Warcross, this def made me feel more. I had the same issues getting into the story in both of them, if I remember correctly, but this one didn't actively annoy me with the romance. I could actually accept it now, cause their romantic involvement had been established and I didn't have to read about it. Overall I'd recommend reading Legend over this series, but If you're really into VR I'd say give this a shot. Also if you're not bothered by insta love, then you could actually enjoy this a lot.
