I didn't know much about the Vietnam war except what I learnt in school. Now I feel like I understand better what happened there and it truly shocks me how the returning soldiers were treated in their home country. I got mad every time I read the sentence "There were no women in Vietnam". I felt happy every time Ethel, Barb and Frankie showed up for each other. I felt sad about what happened to Finley, Jamie and Rye but also happy and shocked at certain revelations. But I loved most that I learnt so much reading a fiction book. Kristin Hannah managed to make me care so much for these characters and I am obsessed with her portrayal of female friendship. I can't really say and don't really know yet what this book did to me. I will definitely be reading more of her work

Ein vielschichtiger Schmöker mit großen Schwächen
(Deutscher Titel: Die Frauen jenseits des Flusses) Die größten Schwächen (natürlich nur meiner Meinung nach): Vorhersehbarkeit und Redundanz. Typische Romance-Elemente, gekoppelt mit fragwürdigen Motiven (Mädchen aus sehr gutem kalifornischen Hause, entscheidet sich im Vietnamkrieg als Krankenschwester zu dienen🙄) und sich immer wiederholende Szenen ohne erkennbare Entwicklung. Stark fand ich die dagegen die eindrückliche Darstellung des Kriegsgeschehens mit vielen liebevollen Details. Auch die Heimkehr der Protagonistin, bei der sie sich völlig überraschend mit Ablehnung und emotionaler Isolation konfrontiert sieht, wird hervorragend und auch sehr bewegend erzählt. Leider dann auch irgendwann too much. Es zieht und zieht sich, zum Ende hin hat es mich dann nochmal richtig gepackt und über den Abschluss habe ich mich geärgert (das hat die Story wirklich nicht nötig). Nichtsdestotrotz, ich habe mit Frankie durchweg mitgefühlt und die Geschichte gerne gelesen. Und es ist nicht zu verleugnen, dass die Autorin sich intensiv mit der Materie auseinandergesetzt hat.
Ein Buch, das mir noch lange in Erinnerung bleiben wird! Wir begleiten darin Krankenschwester Frances, 21 in den Vietnam Krieg. Natürlich sind da zum einen die extrem nahen Kriegsbeschreibungen die unter die Haut gehen. Aber richtig intensiv wird das Buch dann zurück in der Heimat, wo der „Kriegstrubel“ vorbei ist und die dröhnende Leere mit all ihren Konsequenzen zurückbleibt.
Wow. Just wow. A truly inspirational and heartfelt book
I don’t shed many tears whilst reading a book, but this one hit me. Admittedly, I didn’t know much about the Vietnam War. Mainly because war in general, politics, military etc simply don’t spark my interest. This book however made me google a lot about the circumstances, the history, the aftermath. The fact that a lot of the book is true made it a half fiction half nonfiction and I love that concept ! I’ll definitely read more books by Kristin Hannah. Her way to write is captivating and just enjoyable !!
Ein ergreifendes Buch über eine junge Frau die in den Vietnamkrieg zieht (als Krankenschwester) und die mit den Grauen des Krieges sowie nach ihrer Rückkehr mit negativen Reaktionen ihrer Familie und dem gesamten Umfeld konfrontiert wird.
This book… it wrecked me and educated me, made me cry and get emotional, but most of all get angry for women like Frankie, who served their country, saved countless lives by putting their own on the line, enduring the most uncomfortable living situation and trauma, suffering endlessly in the aftermath of the war without any help from the Army or the country that sent them there. The women were bereft of acknowledgment of their sacrifice, being told over and over “there were no women in Vietnam”, and left to deal with the heavy PTSD symptoms that plagued their lives. At times, Frankie’s behavior made me so frustrated but I desperately wanted her to get the happy ending she so deserved. As a non-American, I didn’t know much about the Vietnam war and am glad to have been educated by Hannah’s beautiful writing and telling of this story. The friendship between Frankie, Barb, and Ethel was to me one of the most beautiful parts of this story, as well as the growth trajectory of Frankie’s parents. To sum it all up - go read this beautiful, devastating story of these kick-ass women!
Five stars is not enough for Kristin Hannah nor Julia Whelan. This book was incredible and heartbreaking.
