Über das Buch

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Last summer, Mackenzie Bishop, a Keeper tasked with stopping violent Histories from escaping the Archive, almost lost her life to one. Now, as she starts her junior year at Hyde School, she's struggling to get her life back. But moving on isn't easy – not when her dreams are haunted by what happened. She knows the past is past, knows it cannot hurt her, but it feels so real, and when her nightmares begin to creep into her waking hours, she starts to wonder if she's really safe.

Meanwhile, people are vanishing without a trace, and the only thing they seem to have in common is Mackenzie. She's sure the Archive knows more than they are letting on, but before she can prove it, she becomes the prime suspect. And unless Mac can track down the real culprit, she'll lose everything, not only her role as Keeper, but her memories, and even her life. Can Mackenzie untangle the mystery before she herself unravels?

With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Unbound delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin.

Back into the archive: voids and endings

The Unbound brings us back into the hauntingly beautiful world of the Archive, and while it was a captivating ride, it left me with some mixed feelings. The book starts off with a noticeably slow burn. For a while, it wasn’t entirely clear where the plot was heading or what the central conflict was actually going to be. Oddly enough, I actually enjoyed that! It wrapped the narrative in a layer of mystery that kept me turning the pages, trying to figure out the puzzle. However, because the setup took so long, the climax and resolution felt incredibly rushed in comparison. Everything was suddenly solved too quickly at the very end. The absolute highlight of this book for me was the character growth and the relationships. Mac’s Evolution: Watching Mac evolve and handle the trauma of her experiences was wonderfully done. Wes & The Crew: I absolutely loved the friends in this installment. Wes remains a standout, and the overall character writing is incredibly strong. One of my biggest gripes was that some major plot points were left frustratingly ambiguous. We never truly get a clear answer as to how or why the nightmares and dreams were happening. Was it simply because of Owen being trapped in the Void, or was it something else? That lack of closure on the mechanics of the world left me wanting more. Despite the pacing issues and unanswered questions, V.E. Schwab’s writing is, as always, gorgeous, immersive, and highly interesting. It serves as a good, satisfying conclusion to the story and this unique universe. I enjoyed the characters enough that I would definitely read it again, and I easily recommend it to fans of the first book!
