Beschreibung

The wondrous Aimee Bender conjures the lush and moving story of a girl whose magical gift is really a devastating curse.

On the eve of her ninth birthday, unassuming Rose Edelstein, a girl at the periphery of schoolyard games and her distracted parents’ attention, bites into her mother’s homemade lemon-chocolate cake and discovers she has a magical gift: she can taste her mother’s emotions in the cake. She discovers this gift to her horror, for her mother—her cheerful, good-with-crafts, can-do mother—tastes of despair and desperation. Suddenly, and for the rest of her life, food becomes a peril and a threat to Rose.

The curse her gift has bestowed is the secret knowledge all families keep hidden—her mother’s life outside the home, her father’s detachment, her brother’s clash with the world. Yet as Rose grows up she learns to harness her gift and becomes aware that there are secrets even her taste buds cannot discern.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is a luminous tale about the enormous difficulty of loving someone fully when you know too much about them. It is heartbreaking and funny, wise and sad, and confirms Aimee Bender’s place as “a writer who makes you grateful for the very existence of language” (San Francisco Chronicle).

'The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake' by Aimee BenderRose Edelstein is not like most nine year olds. But then again her family is not your average American suburban happy go lucky family either. Rose discovers that she can taste people's feelings in the food they prepare. Sandwiches scream love me, cakes scream loneliness and doritos taste like factories. However for Rose this talent is more of a curse than a gift when she tastes her mothers affair. But she is not the only one in her family with a hidden talent. This is not your average mainstream entertainment story and book. Throughout the book you feel the underlying sadness of the lifes of each family member. It shows a family in their daily struggle to be the happy family they all want to be. It makes you question your own expectations of family life. Eventhough the story is unrealistic you can actually relate with Rose through the way the book is written. The hidden talents are unique and stimulate your fantasy, what if I was able to taste feelings in food? The characters in the book are well developed and each family member brings another type of person to the book. The father a workaholic, that wants the happy and easy familylife and got three difficult people. The mother seems a little bipolar, has a sleeping disorder and cannot stay with the same profession or study for long. The older brother a genius at first but slowly looses it and becomes average. And Rose the little one that everyone adores but lives in the shadow of her older brother.I enjoyed reading this book and overall was very impressed with it. However it is rather weird to read and sometimes it feels like there is not much action going on. It takes some getting used to the style of writing and to the abnormality of the story. Nevertheless it was quite an experience to read this book and I recommend it to readers who like a book that is different and unlike most books currently found on the bestseller shelve.- by Simonepublished on my blog: http://books-andmore.blogspot.ch/
