Beschreibung

It was her last chance:Amber Bierce had nothing left except her sister and two tickets on Earth’s first colony-ship. She entered her Sleeper with a five-year contract and the promise of a better life, but awakened in wreckage on an unknown world. For the survivors, there is no rescue, no way home and no hope until they are found by Meoraq—a holy warrior more deadly than any hungering beast on this hostile new world…but whose eyes show a different sort of hunger when he looks at her.It was his last year of freedom:Uyane Meoraq is a Sword of Sheul, God’s own instrument of judgment, victor of hundreds of trials, with a conqueror’s rights over all men. Or at least he was until his father’s death. Now, without divine intervention, he will be forced to assume stewardship over House Uyane and lose the life he has always known. At the legendary temple of Xi’Matezh, Meoraq hopes to find the deliverance he seeks, but the humans he encounters on his pilgrimage may prove too great a test even for him…especially the one called Amber, behind whose monstrous appearance burns a woman’s heart unlike any he has ever known. From R. Lee Smith, author of Heat and Cottonwood, comes an epic new story of desire, darkness and the dawn that comes after The Last Hour of Gann.

DO NOT let the page count fool you this is actually a TRILOGY or something. It took me a MONTH to read this 😭 ANYWAY. Check your triggers! This is full of emotional damage, the romance is not fluffy, and the characters are far from perfect. I loved it!

I feel like this is a masterpiece. But its also disturbing enough that I cant recommend this to my rl friends and I have nobody to talk about this with. Once you start reading you cant stop. And whatever you think this is about. It isnt. Its much more. Please take note of TWs before reading. Because there are a lot. This is not easy or light.

I fell for a lizard and it cost me two weeks of my life

Okay so I get why people lose their minds over this book. The slow-burn between Amber and Meoraq is genuinely earned, the worldbuilding is insane in the best way, and Amber is the kind of heroine who actually pulls her own weight (literally and figuratively). The alien culture interaction is easily the highlight , and the romance never feels cheap. But here’s my thing: this book is a 1,000-page behemoth that has a five-star story trapped inside it. And the dark content, multiple r*pe scenes, graphic violence, and slavery, gets genuinely exhausting, that it crosses into relentlessness. Still, if you have patience, a strong stomach, and no weekend plans for the next two weeks, Gann might just scale its way into your heart. (Sorry. Not sorry.)

A lot to take in, but I don’t regret it at all!

These pages do not feel like 700 but far more than a thousand. It’s an epic dark story, full of feelings, worlds colliding and social/ religious criticism. I laughed, cried, was disgusted, angry (a lot), frustrated (a lot more), but all in all I feel like I can take a lot from this book with me. Maybe the best book I‘ve ever read and I will think about it for a long time. I would love to read more about the characters and it makes me sad to never hear from them again. Before you read it check your triggers - it is very very dark, many terrible things happen, so be prepared and maybe take a day off in between reading.
