Beschreibung

In the struggle for women's equality, there is one subject still shrouded in silence - women's compulsive pursuit of beauty. The myth of female beauty challenges every woman, every day of her life.

Naomi Wolf exposes the tyranny of the beauty myth through the ages and its oppressive function today, in the home and at work, in literature and the media, in relationships between men and women, between women and women. With pertinent and intelligent examples, she confronts the beauty industry and its advertising and uncovers the reasons why women are consumed by this destructive obsession.

A non fiction book that is almost 30 years old can be outdated and in some of the chapters I wished for more recent scientific studies. Nevertheless, I though this was eye opening in order to understand and analyze the climate we live in. Have things changed? Yes for sure, but this book is in large parts still relevant and the beauty myth certainly still has a grasp on women and girls.

"Women must stand together instead of supporting the beauty myth and treat each other as enemies." "The beauty myth" by Naomi Wolf tells us about women's beauty and how this concept affects women though centuries. Despite of being written in the 90s, most aspects of the book are sadly still valid nowadays. The book tells the reader about the beauty myth at women's work life, how and why it prevents us from getting freedom and high position in the society. The book also touches such topics as faith, sexuality, culture, hunger and violence. "The beauty myth" especially focuses on the diet culture and esthetic surgery. It also lets us know how could our lives be without the beauty myth. I'm sure that "The Beauty Myth" was revolutionary in the time when it was written. However, after 30 years many things were proved to be wrong. For example, Naomi Wolf uses Freud's theories on women's anatomy and sexuality that were refuted by scientists in 2006. Must read if you don't know much about feminism. However, might be a little boring for the people who have been interested in it for a while.

It’s a really important book to read, not only for people who identify as female but for everyone. It’s true that the thinking behind the beauty myth is directed at women, but men can also find themselves in this book I believe because no one is save from todays world and todays beauty standards
