Suyi Davies Okungbowa hat viele Bücher über Black Poeple verfasst, so auch eine Story von Lucas aus Stranger Things oder Black Panther. „Son of the Storm“ ist so interessant und intensiv gewesen, dass ich nicht immer mithalten konnte – was die Intensität angeht. Das Englisch war hier eine kleine Herausforderung – was ich gerne gestehe und zugebe. Doch das ist nicht tragisch. Wir haben hier eine Welt, die ein wenig an die Zeit vor der Kolonisierung Amerikas erinnert. Schwarze Menschen treffen auf Indianern. Zumindest ist das vom Gefühl her. Yellow People, Black People. (Bassa liegt tatsächlich in Nigeria im Plateau State, laut Wiki). Vorurteile werden angesprochen und dementsprechend haben die Menschen ihre eigene Art der Angstbewältigung und der Wahrnehmung. Das Buch weist eine Welt auf, die sich all dem stellt, mit unglaublichen Protagonisten. Menschen, die kämpfen, aber auch zuhören. Die nicht nur agieren, sondern auch vorher nachdenken. In diesem Buch geht es auch um Magie und um Danso, der ein Geheimnis aufdeckt. Auch von einer starken Frau ist hier die Rede, die all die Vorurteile widerlegt, die sie von den anderen scheinbar trennt … Ich mag es wirklich sehr. Mal schauen, ob es eine Fortsetzung geben wird. Das Buch hatte ich im April 2022 selbst gekauft.
I’ll be honest that throughout most of this book I felt it was a 2.5-3 ⭐️ read, but the end 100 pages bumped it up to 4. Suyi Davies Okungbowa has an incredible imagination and ability to write. The complex characters, socio-political and geographical landscape of this book do make for an epic world building novel. My problem was there was little else for the first 3/4, it was very slow-paced and I struggled with that. That being said, there was a constant tension and build-up to action that prohibited me from DNFing. I didn’t feel much about any of the characters until the final chapters (which definitely redeemed it for me, I was super invested by the end). I’m definitely going to follow this series, I think the pace will pick up from here.
