Better than the movie
So, I finally got around to reading this book. The movie was just ok for me, and everyone told me the book was much better, and it was, but I still don't get the hype around it 😅 There is nothing bad about it. It's a cute and interesting story. I liked it, but I wasn't overly excited about it. The book has like 3 big topics: Simon being blackmailed about his sexualitiy, coming out, and the mystery of Blue's identity. Outside of that, not much happened. It's also about his friends, but besides Abby, they feel kinda distant. Nick is just kinda there, and Leah made me so angry omg. Her whole thing is being mad/jealous about Abby, which was really annoying. At least she wasn't in love with Simon, like in the movie, and the drama was mostly with her (in the movie they were all kinda mad with Simon for not coming out to them sooner, which made me really angry). Also, I hated Martin the whole time. That was almost like incel behavior, and idk how Simon still had some sympathy for him. The coming out topic was probably the best thing about the book for me. Some stuff was relatable, like it being harder to come out to people you've known longer. I just don't know why he kept saying his parents make a big deal out of everything when they didn't 😅 In the movie, it was a way bigger deal, especially with the dad. I think that was the only change I liked because that conversation was nice. Then, the lovestory part. I really liked their emails, especially because of the humor (but the talk about fried oreos actually made me nauseated). The thing with this mystery setup, though, is that we otherwise have almost no interaction up until the end, when his identity is revealed. For me personally, that's just not enough, but I guess the love story is just not the focus here. All in all, more of a "chill" book that was fine to read, but nothing special for me. I hope I'll like "Imogen, Obviously" more, cause that's already on my tbr 👀

Eine süße, spannende Geschichte, die Herzklopfen auslöst! Der Schreibstil der Autorin war sehr angenehm zu lesen, man hat fast gar nicht gemerkt wie die Seiten einfach so dahin geflogen sind. Simon war mir von Anfang an sympathisch. Oreos und Harry Potter? Damit sind wir schon fast Seelenverwandte 😂. Ich fand sein Verhalten sehr nachvollziehbar, konnte seine Gefühle absolut nachvollziehen, habe mir ihm gelacht, geweint und war mit ihn und für ihn wütend. Auch seine Freunde waren ebenfalls absolut genial. Sie brachten die perfekte Mischung zwischen Ernst und Spaß in die Geschichte. Denn sie waren als Gruppe einfach lustig und wunderbar und einfach toll. Die Sache mit den Emails fand ich wirklich spannend, ich habe die ganze Zeit über mitgerätselt und war am Ende trotzdem überrascht und dann hat es doch so viel Sinn gemacht. Und als das Geheimnis dann gelüftet wurde, Leute! Das war diese Art von süß, die einem zum Quietschen bringt. Kennt ihr das? Denn genau das ist mir auf den letzten Seiten passiert. Mehrmals sogar. Weil es einfach so unglaublich süß war und ich glaube, ich habe mich ein bisschen mit verliebt... Deshalb ist das Buch auch absolut empfehlenswert und hat die 5 Sterne absolut verdient!

And just when the trailer came out I knew I had to, had to read this book before anything and everything, it doesn’t matter if the world shuts down and burns itself to ashes. UH NO. IS THE WORLD MAKING SENSE? I KNOW. LEAVE EVERYTHING AND JUST GO AHEAD READ THIS BOOK or if nothing else just watch the film. It is important, this story is important to be heard/ read or at-least watched by everyone. “White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.” WHAT IS SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA ALL ABOUT? “I fall a little bit in love with everyone.” Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised. With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. MY REVIEW SIMON VS THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA Now that I have stated everything- I would also like to add, even though the book is amazing, the storyline is pure and you will have a gala time reading the book- I couldn’t really connect with the characters. Which is the only reason why the book stands have been given a four-star rating from my side? To also support my point– I am not a teenager anymore or at-least my age says so and hence. Ah, saying this out loud makes life much better. “I try not to change, but I keep changing, in all these tiny ways…And every freaking time, I have to reintroduce myself to the universe all over again.” That being said– The book is so freaking adorable, happy and lovely– so lovely that it also suffocates you with the purity and maybe envious of SIMON and of-course the Oreos. I mean I can’t even think of having fried Oreos the thought itself has made me gain like 20 KGs. 🙁 WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT THE BOOK? WHY ARE PEOPLE FREAKING OUT ABOUT? WHAT MAKES IT SO SO LOVABLE AND CUTE? I have your answers, I do. I am like Yoda with Katniss personality — you see what I did there? 😉 “Wow, is that Katniss making out with Yoda?” SIMON: You are one person I want in my life desperately, that being said you know how great of a character he is. The emails. I MEAN, they weren’t how generally after a time emails become, you know? cheesy? the ones which have a lot of cute in it and makes you wonder why are you single or maybe why you don’t have anybody to talk, the ones that make you feel lonely or break a very good relationship you have? yeah, those? These email exchanges will not do that to you but rather make you a better person. A good person. 🙂 SIMON’S FAMILY. Oh my god. How are they so supportive? How are they just who they are? I need such people in my life, I want to become like them. It made me super happy. Yes, it did. I did kind of leave my work to sit on my couch and just read. Maturity. I mean yeah the content was for teenagers, yeah it was about teenagers but the situations have been dealt with so much maturity. Especially in the case of Martin. I applaud Becky for that. Love, friendships and family. This is what our world is made up of, this is what made the book, this was what made it so epic. Oreos. Do I even need to explain this? I love when it is not just one genre it is just so much more than that– this book was I loved how it was part mystery, part friendship book, part discovering your identity and just… So yeah.. that is all I have! Die Geschichte von Simon kannte ich schon, da es für mich ein reread war. Die Chataktere und deren Entwicklung, vor allem Simons kann man in diesem Buch sehr gut erkennen und haben mir sehr gefallen. Allerdings mochte ich Martin nicht so wirklich und der hat dann eher genervt. Im queeren Kontext ist das Buch vor allem wegen den vermeintlich lustigen Sprüchen, die Simons Vater immer mal wieder zwischendurch sagt, wichtig, weil diese Simon verletzen und durch das Fremdouting. Jede Person sollte nämlich das Recht haben, selbst zu entscheiden, wem sie davon erzählt und wem nicht. Der Schreibstil hat mir wieder sehr gefallen, da er recht locker und leicht ist, sodass man nur so durch Buch fliegt. Auch die Hörbuchsprecherstimme von Michael Crouch fand ich sehr angenehm. Insgesamt eine schöne Coming out story, die es sich auf jeden Fall zu lesen lohnt
It was okay, I guess. Partly cute, partly ultracheesy, partly weird. The way bullying was handled but not as I would liked. I would have liked less drama for the sake of resolving the friendship and bullying issues more. Because not everything is resolved with saying sorry. I 'guessed' Blue in that way that I didn't tought about the options Simon saw. I knew it was someone of the sports group but the name of the president twist was done quite well. It was ok but not an extraordinary read for me.
Die meisten kennen das Buch “Love, Simon” (Original: “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda”) von Becky Albertalli oder haben sogar schon den Film gesehen. Schließlich hat das Buch 2017 den Deutschen Jugendliteraturpreis gewonnen! Und das zu Recht! Ich hab beim Lesen sowohl gelacht, als auch geweint, bin geschmolzen, weil es so viele süße Szenen gab, bin aber auch wütend geworden und wäre am liebsten ins Buch hineingesprungen, um einigen meine Meinung zu geigen. Letztendlich ist es ein wunderschönes Buch mit einer tollen Message. [TW: Homophobie, Mobbing] 4,5/5 Das Buch ist ein Entwicklungsroman und handelt von dem 16-jährigen Simon, der versucht herauszufinden, wer er ist und was er will. Nachdem Simon auf Tumblr einen Post von “Blue” gesehen hat, nimmt er mit ihm Kontakt auf und sie schreiben einander Mails, wobei Simon sich als “Jacques” vorstellt, um die Anonymität zu wahren. Denn seltsamerweise ist es für ihn einfacher mit einer fremden Person über seine Geheimnisse zu sprechen als mit seinen besten Freund*innen. Nur sie wissen voneinander, dass sie schwul sind. Bis Simon einmal vergaß sich aus dem Schulcomputer auszuloggen und Martin die Mails las. Und plötzlich wurde alles kompliziert. Anfangs hatte es mich gestört, dass sehr viele Sätze mit “ich” beginnen, aber der Schreibstil passt zu einem Jugendbuch und nach einer Weile habe ich mich daran gewöhnt. Es ist so geschrieben, wie wenn Simon direkt zu einem sprechen würde. Direkt am Anfang war ich so sauer auf Martin. Denn das Buch beginnt damit, dass Martin Simon mit den E-Mails erpresst. Wenn mir ein*e Freund*in das erzählt hätte, hätte ich sofort gesagt, dass jeglicher Kontakt zu Martin gekappt werden sollte. So einfach ist das aber nicht und trotz der Erpressung fand ich ihn immer wieder sympathisch. Martin zeigt ziemlich gut, dass ein Mensch nicht so einfach in “gut” und “böse” einzuteilen ist. Generell strotzt das Buch (im Vergleich zu anderen Büchern) vor Diversität, ohne dass ich das Gefühlt hatte, dass die Charaktere lediglich aufgrund von Diversität diese Eigenschaften zugesprochen bekommen haben. PoC kommen darin vor, die Segregation in Atlanta wurde kurz angesprochen und auch Bisexualität wird erwähnt. Es gibt auch Gesellschaftskritik, was mir persönlich sehr gut gefällt. Bspw. wird das Coming Out als Konzept kritisiert, denn wieso haben Heterosexuelle nicht auch ein Coming Out? Auch die Benutzung von Beleidigungen innerhalb des Freundeskreises, die eigentlich sexistisch sind. Ist es ok eine Freundin spaßeshalber “Bitch” zu nennen? Obwohl man alles aus Simons Sicht miterlebt, lernt man die anderen Charaktere gut kennen. Besonders stolz bin ich auf Simons Charakterentwicklung und ich würde ihn am liebsten ganz doll drücken. Weshalb ich aber nicht die vollen 5 Sterne vergebe: Simon wirkt sehr “woke”, deshalb fand ich es sehr schade, dass er denkt, dass Lesben und bi Mädchen es einfacher haben, weil Jungs das heiß finden. Direkt im Anschluss fügt er hinzu, dass es ja auch Mädchen gibt, die schwule Jungs heiß finden. Allerdings ist das ziemlich problematisch, denn dadurch werden die fetischisiert. Natürlich kann Simon nicht perfekt sein und es denken bestimmt viele Menschen so, aber ein paar Sätze mehr, die erklärt hätten, dass diese Denkweise problematisch ist, hätte ich schön gefunden. Dann bin ich über zwei weitere Dinge gestolpert. Einmal über das Wort “black”, denn das Wort sollte eigentlich großgeschrieben werden, sodass es eindeutig ist, dass von einer Menschengruppe die Rede ist. Dann schrieb Simon in der Mail “your people”, nachdem Blue ihm offenbart hatte, dass er jüdische Traditionen feiert. Im Deutschen wurde das glücklicherweise nicht mit “deine Landsleute” oder so übersetzt, sondern einfach mit “ihr”. (“Ich muss sagen, ihr seid phonetisch sehr kreativ”/”And your people are very creative, phonetically speaking.”) Ich persönlich reagiere da immer sehr allergisch darauf. Das sind für mich aber nur Kleinigkeiten, weshalb ich einen halben Stern abgezogen habe. Denn das schönste, was das Buch mir mitgegeben hat, ist folgendes: “White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.” / “Weiß sollte nicht die Norm sein, genauso wenig wie hetero. Es sollte überhaupt keine Norm geben.”
Ich liebe das Buch. Keine Ahnung wie oft ich das Buch schon gelesen habe aber ich liebe es. Es ist eins meiner Lieblingsbücher. Es ist einfach eine schöne Coming of Age Story mit einem ungeplanten Coming Out. Das Format mit den EMails finde ich auch sehr schön. BlueGreen ist mir sehr sympathisch und ich liebe es jedes Mal nach neuen Hinweisen auf seine Identität zu suchen, auch wenn ich mittlerweile genau weiß, wer Blue Green ist. Simon Says auf Französisch finde ich aber jedes Mal sehr witzig liebe es, dass BlueGreen da nicht früher darauf gekommen ist. Die Dynamik mit Abby finde ich auch sehr spannend und wie schnell sie und Simon eine so tiefgründige Freundschaft entwickeln, trotz des BlackMailings. Leah kann ich aber sehr gut verstehen, im Bezug auf Simon. Einfach eine ganz große Empfehlung, sowohl Buch als auch Film.
Ich fand das Buch sehr spannend, witzig und süß geschrieben und würde es jederzeit wieder lesen🥰

Generell strotzt das Buch (im Vergleich zu anderen Büchern) vor Diversität, ohne dass ich das Gefühlt hatte, dass die Charaktere lediglich aufgrund von Diversität diese Eigenschaften zugesprochen bekommen haben. PoC kommen darin vor, die Segregation in Atlanta wurde kurz angesprochen und auch Bisexualität wird erwähnt. Es gibt auch Gesellschaftskritik, was mir persönlich sehr gut gefällt. Bspw. wird das Coming Out als Konzept kritisiert, denn wieso haben Heterosexuelle nicht auch ein Coming Out? Auch die Benutzung von Beleidigungen innerhalb des Freundeskreises, die eigentlich sexistisch sind. Ist es ok eine Freundin spaßeshalber “Bitch” zu nennen? Obwohl man alles aus Simons Sicht miterlebt, lernt man die anderen Charaktere gut kennen. Besonders stolz bin ich auf Simons Charakterentwicklung und ich würde ihn am liebsten ganz doll drücken. Weshalb ich aber nicht die vollen 5 Sterne vergebe: Simon wirkt sehr “woke”, deshalb fand ich es sehr schade, dass er denkt, dass Lesben und bi Mädchen es einfacher haben, weil Jungs das heiß finden. Direkt im Anschluss fügt er hinzu, dass es ja auch Mädchen gibt, die schwule Jungs heiß finden. Allerdings ist das ziemlich problematisch, denn dadurch werden die fetischisiert. Natürlich kann Simon nicht perfekt sein und es denken bestimmt viele Menschen so, aber ein paar Sätze mehr, die erklärt hätten, dass diese Denkweise problematisch ist, hätte ich schön gefunden. Dann bin ich über zwei weitere Dinge gestolpert. Einmal über das Wort “black”, denn das Wort sollte eigentlich großgeschrieben werden, sodass es eindeutig ist, dass von einer Menschengruppe die Rede ist. Dann schrieb Simon in der Mail “your people”, nachdem Blue ihm offenbart hatte, dass er jüdische Traditionen feiert. Im Deutschen wurde das glücklicherweise nicht mit “deine Landsleute” oder so übersetzt, sondern einfach mit “ihr”. (“Ich muss sagen, ihr seid phonetisch sehr kreativ”/”And your people are very creative, phonetically speaking.”) Ich persönlich reagiere da immer sehr allergisch darauf. Das sind für mich aber nur Kleinigkeiten, weshalb ich einen halben Stern abgezogen habe. Denn das schönste, was das Buch mir mitgegeben hat, ist folgendes: “White shouldn’t be the default any more than straight should be the default. There shouldn’t even be a default.” / “Weiß sollte nicht die Norm sein, genauso wenig wie hetero. Es sollte überhaupt keine Norm geben.”
Ich liebe das Buch. Keine Ahnung wie oft ich das Buch schon gelesen habe aber ich liebe es. Es ist eins meiner Lieblingsbücher. Es ist einfach eine schöne Coming of Age Story mit einem ungeplanten Coming Out. Das Format mit den EMails finde ich auch sehr schön. BlueGreen ist mir sehr sympathisch und ich liebe es jedes Mal nach neuen Hinweisen auf seine Identität zu suchen, auch wenn ich mittlerweile genau weiß, wer Blue Green ist. Simon Says auf Französisch finde ich aber jedes Mal sehr witzig liebe es, dass BlueGreen da nicht früher darauf gekommen ist. Die Dynamik mit Abby finde ich auch sehr spannend und wie schnell sie und Simon eine so tiefgründige Freundschaft entwickeln, trotz des BlackMailings. Leah kann ich aber sehr gut verstehen, im Bezug auf Simon. Einfach eine ganz große Empfehlung, sowohl Buch als auch Film.
Ich fand das Buch sehr spannend, witzig und süß geschrieben und würde es jederzeit wieder lesen🥰
