This Urtext edition is based upon the autographs of the piano works of Brahms and/or copies of first editions publushed during the composer's lifetime, most being Handexemplar copies owned by the composer, which contains his subsequent revisions. The editors have attempted to present a score with an appearance to correspond as closely as possible in content and form to the intentions of the composer. Unavoidable editorial additions have therefore been given in small print and in square brackets. Revisions are detailed in the notes.
