I guess all fantasy romance doesn't suck

I was ready to give this book 4 stars until the last few chapters happened. Idk about you but in my romances I have no interest in reading about one of the mains being tortured and mutilated. And it’s like the author couldn’t bother writing the last part of the story so she rushed through something major in 30 pages. I won’t be reading any of the sequels.

I read this book for the first time in 2016, I believe and I wanted to reread it. And I wasn't disappointed. This is the best "my love interest is ugly" book I've ever read, and it's still just as good 5 years later. I read it in a day, because it's a book I just couldn't put down, the love story is so well done, it's a slow burn that builds off friendship and mutual understanding, which I love. Both characters are so well made and want to work together in this situation that none of them choose. If you life fantasy and books that are about to entirely different people who learn from each other, just read it

"I will conquer kingdoms for you if you but ask it of me, Ildiko." "Just defeat the pie without either of us getting stung, husband. I'll be satisfied." The cover was what drew me in, there was just something about this that kept yelling "you wanna read me!". Once I started reading, I got a little sceptical because of the writing. It just didn't flow if you know what I mean. But depite the hiccups in the writing (and the layout..), I could not put this down. Ildiko and Brishen were just too awesome. The way the two of the went about their situation was just beautiful (and funny) to watch. While I really struggled with what a Kai is excactly, I had really bright images of everything my head (sometimes testing my gag reflex...). What really brought this book into my favor, next to the characters, was the humor. I laughed so often at how Ildiko and Brishen talk to each other. I will be reading Eidolon as soon as possible.
