Syd’s life is not his own. As a proxy he must to pay for someone else's crimes. When his patron Knox crashes a car and kills someone, Syd is branded and sentenced to death. The boys realize the only way to beat the system is to save each other so they flee. The ensuing cross-country chase will uncover a secret society of rebels, test the boys' resolve, and shine a blinding light onto a world of those who owe and those who pay.
This fast-paced thrill ride of a novel is full of breakneck action, shocking twists and heart-hammering suspense that will have readers gasping until the very last page.
This edition includes a exclusive bonus story featuring Syd and Knox!

The beginning is very action-packed and throws the reader right into the story. Bit by bit we get to know more about the characters and their destiny. I really liked the premise with the proxies and patrons. To me that was something new in dystopian fiction. I also enjoyed the dark atmosphere of the book. Still I think there could have been a bit more world building, especially about the world itself and what happened in the past which made the world like it is now. The characters were pretty likable but throughout the whole book they remained a bit shallow to me. I couldn't connect with them and wasn't hooked completely, even though I think they had a lot of potential in being different to the average YA books. Something I really missed in this book were emotions. The interactions between the characters remained very distant and everything was dealt with in a very short way. Despite this I enjoyed the author's writing style which made the book a very fast-paced read.
This book! Urgh! It was so good! In the beginning I think as confused, world building and all, but it was easy to adjust and understand it. The story flowed in a fast paced way and just like Syd feels, time seems to blur. When we meet Knox he his kind of a playboy that thinks too highly of himself (his beauty and hacking skills). When we meet Syd he is just a character trying to go by unnoticed. Egan is a loose mouth that didn't deserve his fate but like Knox I was doubting him (more because of the deal he'd made and how things happened). Marie is kind of a confusing character and I never fully trusted her. She just believed in her cause a little too much without thinking of all the consequences of it and trying to impose on others. Knox redeems himself a lot and, of course, I fell hard for him (and shed a tear in the end because of it; I truly did not see that coming!). He is a very complex character, with multiple layers. Everything in his past justifies the ending of this book. He grew to care for Syd and Marie, more than he expected to. They saved him in a way he didn't know he could. Syd is not so complex for the simple fact that he changes very little over the book. He understands Marie's cause and even kind of wants it but when losing one friend he gains other friends, real and unexpected ones that's really cares about. And in the end Marie kind of convinced me. Oh and despite how bad Knox's father is made to look, in the end he kind of redeems himself by actually crying over his son's death, and showing that he cares... A little too late though...
