Pontificia Cohors Helvetica (1506-2006)

In oratione latine habita dixit: “Pro viribus cohortemur incitemusque vos ante omnes ad litteras nostras Latinas, tam antiquas quam recentiores, tam saeculares quam sacras, omni cultu ac fervore non tantum adservandas, verum etiam novis rationibus docendas et inter iuniores potissimum progandas.” Antiquissimus qui in mundo exstat exercitus, Pontificia nempe Cohors Helvetica in Urbe, anno ineunte MMVI diem celebrabit, quo quingentos annos ante condita est. Nam “Acriter et Fortiter” ex die 22 mensis ianuarii 1506 Summum Pontificem eiusque domum defendit tueturque. Adhortationi Beatissimi Patris Benedicti XVI obsequens domus editoria, cui nomen est “nova & vetera”, iam ante Festum Nativitatis Christi libellum singularem in lucem edet monumenta rerum gestarum Pontificiae Cohortis Helveticae in lingua Latina breviter complectentem. Verba (seu textus) ab Udalrico NERSINGER, celeberrimo perito in rebus Vaticanis et cooperatore nostrae domus editoriae, theodisce magna cum diligentia conscripta sunt, quae Gero P. WEISHAUPT, sacerdos, iudex diocesanus et officialis Curiae Romanae, magno cum studio in linguam Latinam vertit. On 28th November 2005 Pope Benedict XVI. received in audience participants and organisers of ‘Certamen Vaticanum’, an international competition of Latin prose and poetry. In his speech, delivered in Latin, the Pope said: “I want to encourage and call upon you not only to preserve and honour with enthusiasm our Latin literature, be it classical or modern, profane or spiritual in nature, but also to teach Latin in a contemporary fashion thereby acquainting namely young people with it. In January 2006 the oldest military force in the world, the Papal Swiss Guards, will be celebrating their jubilee year as they will look back on a proud history of 500 years of service to the Pope. Ever since the 22nd January 1506 the Guards have guarded and shielded the Pope and his residence ‘acriter et fideliter’: ‘valiant and true’. Paying tribute to this remarkable anniversary nova & vetera publishers, thus heeding the Pope’s call, will present a special publication: a short history and description of the Swiss Guards, written in Latin. The booklet was written by the renowned German Vatican expert Ulrich Nersinger and was translated into Latin by Fr. Gero P. Weishaupt. Fr. Weishaupt is a priest of the Diocese of Roermond in the Netherlands and is Official of the Pontificial Commission for the Cultural Goods of the Church. Not unlike a church guide book the small brochure comprises 24 text pages and has a coloured cover. It is written entirely in Latin. It will not only be a welcome present for all friends of the classical language of the Church but it will also be a special souvenir of the Swiss Guards’ jubilee year. In seiner lateinischen Ansprache sagte der Papst: „Ich möchte euch ermuntern und anspornen, daß ihr unsere lateinische Literatur, sei sie nun antik oder modern, weltlich oder geistlich, nicht nur mit ehrendem Eifer bewahrt, sondern sie auch mit neuen Ideen lehrt und sie vornehmlich den jungen Menschen nahe bringt.“ Die älteste militärische Einheit der Welt, die Päpstliche Schweizergarde in Rom, wird Anfang des Jahres 2006 auf eine 500jährige Geschichte zurückblicken dürfen. In Tapferkeit und Treue – „acriter et fideliter“ – beschützt sie seit dem 22. Januar 1506 den Papst und seine Residenz. Zu diesem außergewöhnlichen Jubiläum legt der Verlag nova & vetera – dem Aufruf des Papstes folgend – eine außergewöhnliche Schrift vor: eine kurze Geschichte und Darstellung der Päpstlichen Schweizergarde in lateinischer Sprache. Der deutsche Originaltext stammt aus der Feder des bekannten Vatikanexperten Ulrich Nersinger. Die Übertragung ins Lateinische besorgte Gero P. Weishaupt, Priester der Diözese Roermond und Offizial der Päpstlichen Kommission für die Kulturgüter der Kirche (Weishaupt hat u. a. für Radio Vatikan Nachrichten aus Rom in der offiziellen Sprache der Kirche verfaßt). Die kleine Broschüre umfaßt, wie ein Kirchenführer, im farbigen Umschlag 24 Textseiten und ist komplett in Latein verfaßt. Sie ist nicht nur ein außergewöhnliches Geschenk für alle Freunde der klassischen Kirchensprache, sondern auch ein besonderes Andenken an das denkwürdige Jubiläum der Schweizergarde.
