Beschreibung

Jean Rhys's late, literary masterpiece Wide Sargasso Sea was inspired by Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, and is set in the lush, beguiling landscape of Jamaica in the 1830s. Born into an oppressive, colonialist society, Creole heiress Antoinette Cosway meets a young Englishman who is drawn to her innocent sensuality and beauty. After their marriage the rumours begin, poisoning her husband against her. Caught between his demands and her own precarious sense of belonging, Antoinette is driven towards madness.

While this is an effectively sad story about a girl who just can't get a break in life, it didn't work for me as a backstory to Jane Eyre nor did it particularly impress me on its own. While the events aren't unlikely to be the things that let to the state that they are in the classic, the way it was presented was too rushed and jumped too much in two places to naturally lead into it. I could imagine what Antoinette and even Rochester experienced, but I didn't feel it. It didn't didn't work as the revelation that it should be and some little things like the name change felt kind of forced. On it's own, it wasn't a bad story. A little too short and distressing for me to fully enjoy it, but I liked how the themes of not feeling like you belong somewhere, due to culture or other aspects, colonialism and harmful marriages were explored.
